    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

oil cooler on a gs 000

hi, has anyone fitted an oil cooler on their GS, and do you think it is really necessary? im probably erring towards the bling factor but it is bored out to 1085cc with nitrous so it will prduce more heat. the oil pump gears have been uprated so the oil flow will be greater but as its a low pressure system i dont know if i will need a cooler.

any ideas or sggestions will be most appreciated thanks. \\:D/
 
Wow, a 000 CC engine bored out to 1085! How'd you do that? :wink:

Kidding aside, it's been done by quite a few people I think. I expect someone who has will chime in soon.

Yeah, it's next to impossible to change your id or thread title.

When I was at UEA in Norwich I had a friend from Plymouth. It's been years since I've been there. Nice town in a nice area, at least it was back in the late '70s when I was there.
 
I would think with the temps you normally get in the UK and with today's modern oils it would just be another place for a leak to happen.

If you live in the mountains of Morrocco or Arizona or someplace it's a different story.
 
I’m in the process of fitting one up for my 850. Don’t think it necessary per say but it’s a nice safety net if you ride in hot weather and/or get caught in traffic sometimes – people with GS1100’s, which have a temp gauge, report 300 deg. F oil temps in some instances.

Unfortunately, there are no complete kits available on the market (in the US anyway). I modified my oil pressure adaptor plate to accept the appropriate fittings and ordered a Earl’s cooler (should be here any day). Going to make my own lines using flexible AN tubing. Going to put together an oil pressure gauge first though to make sure my cooler doesn’t mess up the factory oiling system.

Better be 100 degrees F, or a whole lot of people would be dead. Troops over there say 55 degrees C is a hot day in Afghanistan.
 
i've been thinking on an oil cooler as well. more for the experence than the requirement.. also curious about these oil cooling fittings i've seen.

Been playing around the different fittings but this is getting close.

Suzuki changed the oil pressure sensor adapter at some point to add the boss shown on the end. I drilled and tapped it for a 1/4" NTP fitting. Replaced the stock oil pressure sensor with one from Napa (US based auto parts chain store).

Found a hydraulic fitting that fits the stock 20x1.5mm threads in the adapter plate and modified it to accept the other fitting. The nut of the fitting extends down and fits down on top of the oil feed port in the engine. The way it's set up now 100% of the oil flow through that oil galley will go through the cooler. Haven't decided how I'm going to route the lines yet, most likely one around each side of the engine but haven't ruled out running both on the right side.

that is a nice clean looking little adapter. giving me ideas for after the riding season >:)
 
thats a neat looking adaptor, i will have to try and get hold of the plate with the little boss on it as mine hasnt got that.
i may be wrong but if 100% of the oil flow is directed to the cooler will that not starve the top end of the motor as you are effectively blocking off the oil feed gallery that feeds the head?

Oil comes up the main galley line and fills the cavity covered by the adapter plate. The cavity has two holes on the ends: one going up to the head and one going down to the transmission. I'm not stealing the oil, just borrowing it for a while to cool it, the return port will fill the cavity.

Going to install an oil pressure gauge on the cylinder before going much farther; need to make sure my kit does not effect the pressure. What I'm doing has been done before so it should be okay (I think).

that sounds cool,if you pardon the pun! will you be increasing the amount of oil in the engine to account for the oil that is through the cooler, also what size cooler are you using?
where are you fitting the gauge, is it where the bolt goes on the right hand side of the crankcase? will have to be a very low pressure gauge

Yea, more oil. Not sure how much more; going to fill up the system off the bike and measure how much it takes.

Ordered an Earl's cooler; the curved type - getting the smallest one which is larger than most OE coolers.

On the right side of the cylinder there is an oil galley plug, which is where the gauge is typically placed. 15 psi gauges are fairly common, mostly for use to measure fuel pressure. VDO makes a nice one (about $20 USD). Going to have to fiddle to figure out an adapter fitting since the plug is metric.

Takes some fiddling but that's part of the fun.:-D

keep us posted on how it goes mate. gonna keep my eye out for that pressure switch plate with the boss on it. had a trawl through ebay but nothing there, maybe its a US part only. may advertise in the parts wanted on here if i get stuck
