A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Oil Filter Cover - Bolts instead of studs

I changed the oil on the bike yesterday and have had a bad stud for a while. I decided to use some of my nice new SS Allen head bolts to put the cover on instead of replacing the studs. This seems to have worked rather well.

However, I know the possibility of stripping the holes is now higher. I did however use a small allen wrench to tighten, so overtightening shouldn't be an issue as you can only get so much leverage on it anyway.

I just wanted to get some other opinions on the subject or some reasons why I should go back to the studs.

Thanks for any input you may have.

The studs reduce the wear on the aluminum block. I would go back to studs. get some new ones and loctite them in. I wouldn't use the bolts more than a few times.

What clone said -- the issue is wear on the threads in that thin, precious aluminum. There's probably not room for a helicoil if things go horribly wrong. (Has anyone tried this yet?)

The stock studs are made from low-grade pressed sawdust and cheddar cheese. I found new 6mm studs at my corner Ace hardware store that work and hold up far better.

Most of the OEM studs are designed for the job - if you measure the outside diameter of a new stud, you will find the thread size is very slightly oversized compared to the bolt you are using to bite better in the holes and withstand the different expansion rates of the metals. You'll find this with exhaust studs as well.

I would recommend going back to studs - you don't want to be wearing the thread out.

When I bought my GS850 I found that a previous owner had replaced one stud with a bolt, and compensated for the extra length with washers. I replaced this with stock parts (still available from Suzuki).

In general, I prefer to keep the bike in stock condition unless I'm *sure* that I know enough to improve it.

Just stop changing oil if you want to save wear and tear on the block.

I'm sorry, I CAN be constructive. Sometimes.\\:D/
