So I changed the oil on my gs 1100 gk the other day, and apparently pinched the o-ring enough to break it... went a got a new one.... By the way, oreilleys auto parts stocks it in the wix brand. Anyhow, it seems as though my o ring is too small for the groove. When I line up the indentions for the bolt holes, the o-ring comes out of the groove. And no amount of grease is going to hold it I dont think....

Has anyone run into this problem before? I didnt find anything after running a couple of searches. Please help

I had same problem,The o-ring that came with mine the o-ring was to skinny. They did get me another one that was a little better, enough that i got buy with it. suzuki o-ring is the way to go in long run.If I remember they said (oriellys said) wix had 2 or 3 possible part numbers that might apply??One comes with filter others did not.Different brand filters might have better o-rings than other a while back this was mentioned on this forum

I did see the posts regarding skinny o rings, but thouht that it was more referencing the diameter of the rubber itself, not the diameter of the o ring. I did notice that the old o ring that I took off seemed to be too large for the cap itself, and wouldnt fit back into the groove, not matter how much coaxing I tried.

Sadly the zuki shop here couldnt find their a$$es with both hands and a map unless you want to talk about moto cross... And didnt even know what I was referring to when I asked about the o ring, so I guess thats out

Look it up on Babbitt's or someplace, give Suzuki the part number.
If it's not in stock it will take as long as an online place.

Is there a way to cross reference it? Im either retarded or not seeing it

Prolly have the wrong part. Go to Bikebandit.com they have what you need. Ive bought that exact part there, its like 2 or 3 bucks so bought a few of them. Check out that site, I just put up a new post about the site check it out

I just changed mine for the first time, the o ring with the K&N filter fit perfect, I got it though my work at Autozone $10 bucks for filter and o ring

I use Zook parts and change it once every two years at most.
Yes I change my oil.

O ring 16518-45000 1 $3.78

Look at any of the vendor sites, the o-ring is on the oil pump, oil filter fiche.

Alpha Sports $5.10
Babbitts $3.02
Bike Bandit $3.78
Carolina Cycle $3.45
Flatout $3.33
MotoGrid $3.21
MR Cycles $4.31
PartShark $3.08
Ron Ayres $3.52

Read some of the sites carefully, though, some of them have minimum order amounts.

.

In other words, the OEM o-ring from Suzuki is known to fit perfectly, is cheap, and can be re-used through several oil changes. Order up two, so you have a spare. Murphy's law, you know. ;)

Why fart around with the shoddy imitation o-rings found in aftermarket oil filter kits? Some fit, many do not.

While you're at it, order up some new studs and nuts for the oil filter cover. These are made of something of the same hardness as pressed cardboard and cheddar cheese, and the threads strip out at the slightest provocation. Have them on hand before you need them desperately to save your nice clean garage floor.

why not just stretch it a bit so it gets you through, i don't see that being a problem unless it's grossly undersized...

Just a little FYI.

I bought 2 Wix oil filters for my 79 GS850 thru a local auto parts store. Part #24931. This part has an oring that is .095" thick. There is a second part #, 24932, list for suzuki bikes. The filters are identical but the oring is only .085" thick. I got this info off Wix's website before I bought the filters.

I believe the Fram Ch6000 and CH6001 are the same deal-identcal filters but different orings.

Listen to this man...he knowith of what he speaks....

I buy Wix oil filters, with the o-ring. I've only had one o-ring leak (on a x-country trip of course). I change the o-ring about every other filter change, so I've got about half a dozen in plastic bags hanging on a nail in my garage. Wix finally got smart and quit folding the o-rings to fit them in the box and they work much better now. I did get one oil filter in the right box, wrong filter though, quite a while back. On that same trip with the leaky o-ring, I changed oil at my Mom's house in Yucca Valley, CA, and the local Suzuki dealer had the filter but no o-ring, so I still had to use the bad o-ring and seal the whole works with silicone gasket maker.

I hate this bike.... Let me make that very clear....

So... new o ring... installed step by step by the instructions provided....
new studs installed.....
New Acorn nuts installed....
New oil installed

Fired it up, leaking more than before.... o ring still in the groove and in good shape, studs in and look good, screw this someone get me a beer

And to help clarify, I've built 4 custom motorcycles previous to this project so I'd say if nothing else, Im not mechanically inept, maybe not a pro, but I can damned sure build a bike and a motor without problems like this.

Who made the o ring? Is it the right thickness and shape?
Is there damage preventing it from sealing? Is the cover warped? Cracked? Gouged?
They don't just leak unless there is something wrong.

The o-ring is from the zuki dealership, the guy I got the bike from had a couple of extra for when he changed the oil. The cover is clean (I cleaned the whole thing up and as far as I can tell, is true, I ran a straight edge around the whole thing to check for warp or indentions/highspots.

Im sure that there is a very good reason that its leaking, but I'll be damned if I can see why. It is starting to feel like a money pit and a bike that I still cant ride thats just messing up the floor in my garage and my mood...

Sorry for venting on the forums, but Im tired of having a bike I cant ride....

By the way, I cleaned up the carbs exactly how cliff's link showed me... and after 2 days of leaning on the kickstand, the left side carbs are just pouring gas out of the overflow like the floats are stuck again... I even cleaned out the tank, coated it, cured it and changed the petcock (which was new cause its a harley tank).

Possibly the studs are not screwed in all the way or are too long? Just a thought. Ray

Two hints here.
Firstly if you had a proper vacuum operated petcock you would not have had gas flowing out.
Secondly if you or PO had removed the needle seats with a pliers you may have slightly ovalled them and cause the needle to stick sometimes.
