DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Oil Filter O ring Help.... Please

You must not ride much nothing but break down after break down for mine

I always use HIFLO FILTRO filters.
$5.00 through Dennis Kirk comes with O-ring, never had any issues.
D-Kirk part #30-3876.
usually throw one in the order when buying other stuff so I have one on hand.

If you take the filter cover off again, take out the o-ring, and inspect the groove that houses the o-ring for impacted dirt/debris.....it doesn't take much to compromise the seal. The only time I had slight Harley-like 'marking of territory' oil spots, I found this to be the issue....I suspected the o-ring too, because I had not changed it in 3 years, so I did change it, but luckily noticed the problem when I had the cover off. Cleaning out the smidge of impacted debris in the groove with a pick, and the mating surface on the bike with solvent, took care of it. That said, if you have oil pouring out in a fast leak, very likely the o-ring has kinked or slipped out of groove, while you were putting the cover back on.:-k
If none of the studs/acorns were stripped, you were better off leaving them alone, IMHO, though it's a good idea to have spares on hand, as recommended by Mr. Winger.....changing multiple things at once makes the troubleshooting a bit more difficult.:(

Tony.

Just a little FYI.

I bought 2 Wix oil filters for my 79 GS850 thru a local auto parts store. Part #24931. This part has an oring that is .095" thick. There is a second part #, 24932, list for suzuki bikes. The filters are identical but the oring is only .085" thick. I got this info off Wix's website before I bought the filters.

I believe the Fram Ch6000 and CH6001 are the same deal-identcal filters but different orings.

Napa Auto parts sells the Wix filters under their own brand -- PS4931 instead of 24931. If your town has a traffic light, you probably have a Napa auto parts that can order up three or four of these for you. The filters are very nice quality, and your odds of getting an o-ring that fits are better than with some other aftermarket filters.

Yep, I've got 1 of them about 1/2 mile from the other store. I'll have to check and see what kind of price they give me. Thanks for the tip.

Scott

PS Actually, we have 4 traffic lights. :)
