If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hi All,

I am looking at purchasing a 82 GS850G 24k original miles. I asked the owner if there were any leaks and he said he gets a very small couple drops from where the tach cable enters the top of the motor? Does this sound right is this a common problem has anybody heard of this? Thanks in advance!!!

Thanks!

Yes, the seals can go bad especially knowing it's a 31 year old bike. Don't let that stop you from being interested in it especially if it's in good condition but don't trust everything he says either.

Where are you at?

Hi I live in Florida. The gentalman sounded nice over the phone...80 years old just had the carbs cleaned and synched. I figured there was an oring or something in there. He said its runs great, but hes getting too old for riding.

-side question the bike has a vetter fairing on it. Do you know if they can be removed easily? Will I have to buy a new light.

Although he might have sounded nice on the phone, you'll need to assume all of the maintenance has not been done. Post up a welcome in the GS Owners section once you get the bike and you'll get a post from Basscliff you'll want to read.

My Vetter fairing has it's own light but the oem headlight bucket is still there, back behind the fairing headlight. You might need a new bulb. The seller should know if the old bucket is still back there.

Mine came with a Vetter, but the original headlight, turn signals, and brackets had been removed. The owner still had them in a box. You should ask him if he has them.

Very simple problem to fix...

Then you'll wonder why the hell that widget on the back of the engine is leaking...

And this is how the dance begins. Mine started with a leaky clutch cover gasket. Then, gotta clean that gook outta that little window! Then the cam chain tensioner o-rings, then the tach drive o-ring. Carbs, of course. Then the carb boot o-rings. Adjust the valves, new cam cover gasket and half-moons. The throttle cables are already loose, so I'll replace those. And the clutch cable. Petcock has silicone packed around it, so new seal, washers, and screws. Tires, tubes, and rim strips. New grips. New plugs and wires. New ignition system. Oil and filter change. Air filter. Battery. Did I just hijack this thread?

Ha Ha - spot on...:D

Sorry. Forgot about the fork seals and oil. And the neck bearings. And the brake hoses, and rebuild kits for the brakes. And brake shoes. Fuel and vacuum lines. And chasing down shorts in the electrical system. Is it worth it? Yes. Absolutely.

Thanks so much for the great tips. The bike im looking at is more on the east coast so its a different one. I think its in pretty good shape and been taken care of, I just really dont like the fairing. I know the owner said he did not have the original parts seperately as he bought it already with the vetter kit and liked it. To each is own.
