Oil Passage Restrictor or Cover

I recently purchased a gs1150 oil cooler, lines, fittings, etc. Ebay item #300915912097 really nice for the price for my 82 gs1100 and as I understand it I will need the 1150 filter housing cover in order to have it function properly on my 1100.I priced the 1150 cover and at my dealer cost it is $86.91 Ouch! I even think it is black and won't match my silver cases. My question is I have seen in several other forums that there is a restrictor that can be installed behind the stock cover and divert some of the oil through the cooler without welding etc. The flying banana forum was a good article explaining the oil flow etc. Does any one know the part # for the restrictor if there is one or where to get such a piece or is it something that needs fabricating or what? I see a dia. of 2.5 mm for the oil passage hole that needs to be drilled in the plug if I plan to make one. Is that correct also? Is the plug press fit, tapped, or what any pics would be greatly appreciated if any one has them. Any and all ideas also appreciated. Thanks to all.

I don't have one but if the ID of the passage entering the cover area is 10mm then a loose fitting 10 mm plug is all you need. You can also drill a whole to mimic the bleed port on the 1150 cover. Off hand don't know what that size was but I know I have posted pictures of it in the past.

I found this with some measurements of a stock cover and a formula to convert the size of the passage to the hole that needs to be drilled.2.47 mm so 2.5 should be fine then.

as far as I can tell the formula is wrong but probably doesn't mater

Found this little tid bit while searching for the restrictor. "Earl's UK — more brake lines, hoses, oil coolers, etc. They used to do an 'oil diversion bung' (Part no. ED19) for GSX Suzukis, but not any more (alas) even though it's really a recommended item if you want to fit an oil cooler. Why is a bung needed? Explanation here. In any case manufacturing your own bung presents no real difficulties". Thanks any way for the reply looks like it's discontinued though. Looks like this is turning into a bitch I might as well bite the bullet and get a new cover from Suzuki .The only used one I found was 75$ New retail is approx150$ my cost on one is 86.92$ I will have to strip and paint it though if I want it to match.

I just made a bung that was a good fit in the hole & the standard cover holds it in. The 2,5mm bypass hole is just in case the cooler blocks up which is unlikely on a well maintained bike. I personally didn't bother as I want all the oil to go through the cooler.

I know they make these for the '82 GS1100EZ. I think mine had a oil cooler on it once upon a time.

Don't make this too difficult.
Alternate o-rings and washers on a bolt with a nylon lock washer holding it all together. Put in the port and put the cover on.
Install the cooler.
I run this setup and cooled my bike down thirty degrees.

Yes I agree I am not wanting to or did not want to make things difficult. I was seeking advice on witch would be best advised as to fully restricting the passage, or bleeding some off to the filter as in a stock cover. I was not sure on how to make a restrictor and if I did could it accidently go back into the oil passage too far and block it off completely and starve the cooler and the filter. No disrespect but I for myself for the price of a 1150 cover would not stack a bunch of washers, and o-rings, on a bolt, with a lock nut and then place them into an oil supply passage in any motor and fully trust it even though it has worked in your application with no adverse results. Again no disrespect intended. I just could not sleep.

While Bill's solution may not be elegant, it is effective and is at the same time is indirectly answering your question. The billed I'd only there to provide some flow in case of the cooler plugging or to provide some minimal flow prior to flow being established in the cooler. Personally I would minim the stock 1150 cover at least in terms of the billed port. Suzuki probably had resins for doing so which would be hard to determine so many years later. Your choice on what the easiest solution is to achieving that. I bought an 1150 cover when they were still $25 , do I never needed to address your problem in another way, but is seems like some sort of plug could be fashioned to fit in to the same recess as the cast plug. It would be capture so an interference fit even if loose would likely sufffice.
