A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Ooops. I guess it's my turn ...

OK, update time.

Got back from a quick trip "around the block". The chosen block took me 16 miles. Everything was DRY. :dancing:

The only thing done to "fix" this problem was a valve cover gasket change.
The old gasket did not look bad, so I don't know why it leaked. :-k

Just a couple more details and I will be ready for the Ozark Rally in Missouri. :encouragement:

It feels strange being ready this far ahead of time.

.

You don't sound convinced.
I see what you're doing there saying everything is ready in a loud voice............. hoping that leak will feel safe enough to come back out from wherever it's hiding. :)

OK, no diagnosis results tonight.

I was headed out to the shop, got a text message from another GSer who was on his way with a broken clutch cable. I told him I had some cables, but did not know what all I had, come on over. While waiting for him, ANOTHER GSer stopped by, had a dead battery just down the street. Diagnosed that one to a dead stator, which he will order.

Bottom line, two extra bikes in the shop right now. It looks like they are BREEDING.

Just got back from taking one of them home, it's bedtime now.

.

Whose 1100G is that?

That was the main attraction at Brown County on Saturday night. :encouragement:

It's Joe Garfield's bike.

The blue 1100GL belongs to Big Brother (the guy that started the "Craigslist Funnies" thread several years ago).

The Twinstar on the left is a project for a friend of my son.

OK, have put on about 100 miles since the gasket replacement. :-k

The outside of the engine is DRY!! :dancing: :dancing:

I am amazed at how little I did, but it seemed to have worked.

I removed the gasket. It came out in one piece, so was easy to inspect for flaws. I saw none.

I re-torqued the head. Just out of principle. Loosened each nut, re-torqued to proper specs.

I checked valve clearances. Virtually no changes since last time in there, 2991 miles ago.

I installed a new valve cover gasket and torqued the cover down. Installed the breather with the same (old) gasket.

I topped off the crankcase with more SYNTHETIC

oil.

I have now ridden about 100 miles, it looks great to me. :encouragement:

Steve,
I have some slight seepage at jug base and head gasket that I think a re-torque would cure. When you say "loosened each nut" you meant one at a time then torqued to spec or did you loosen all then torque?

I did them one at a time, just to be sure I did not disturb anything else.

Might have to check with one of the more experience engine builders to see if that was the correct procedure, but that's what I did. :encouragement:

Just to add a bit of detail: The torque spec for my 850 is 27 lb-ft. I would loosen one nut, then torque it to 24. Repeat on all the others, taking them all to 24 lb-ft.
After they were all at 24, I followed the correct pattern and tightened them all to 27.

.

That's what I read elsewhere. Sounds like the way I want to go.

Thank you,
Alan

There is no guarantee that will stop your leak, but it's a good first step to eliminating the possibility of loose fasteners. :encouragement:

.

Yeah I know. The machine runs too good and the compression is too good for disturbing yet.
The leak is just enough to collect dust and require an often "gunking" wash.

Steve, I'm glad to hear you got the leak fixed, and that it wasn't more than the valve cover gasket.

Edit: It took everything I had to not contribute to the 'oil thread'.
