    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Overfilled oil?

I think I overfilled my 1100 with oil.

Yesterday I completed the refinish of my front sprocket cover. I knew that I'd been leaking a little oil, so I gave it a check. Nothing in the sight glass. Now, the bike had been sitting for at least a couple days, and I have no centerstand so I had to hold the brake, and steady the bike in the uproght position as I attempted to look through the sightglass. Anyway, I couldn't see the oil so I added oil...and added oil... until it was at the H line when the bike was upright. It wound up being quite a bit of oil, probably more than a liter... or two.

So I accept the fact that I neglected my oil level and hope that nothing is damaged. I went out for a long ride, 30-40 minutes. By the end I found that my left boot was slipping off the shifter and not gripping the ground at stop signs. When I got home I found my boot soaked with oil. Today I looked closer at the bike and I see that there is oil all over the left side of my transmission. I can't really tell where it was coming from as there's too much. There is definitely some coming from the stator cover, where I know I have a torn gasket. It usually doesn't leak much. So anyway, I leaned the bike over to the right in an effort to drain the oil out of the stator cover. I then removed it and oil went everywhere. Oops. I understand that with the proper level of oil there should be only a residual amount of oil in this area.

Does it sound like I overfilled it?

You say you have no centerstand? If it was on the side stand LOTS of oil will come out If you have it in an upright position maybe 1/4 qt or less
 
do an oil change (don't change the filter) and add the required 3 qts (or whatever it is for your bike) and at least you'll know the engine has the proper quantity.. you might use blocks to stabilize the bike overnight to check that the window level is right.

Gee, I just got in from work with my RIGHT boot and pantleg well-oiled. I accidentally overfilled (by 1/2 liter or so) and now have a pretty good leak somewhere around 3 & 4, can't tell exactly where but #3 plug well is oiled, as well as the right front of the head and barrel close to the joint. Anyone wanna point me in the right direction or shall I just start unbolting and checking gaskets? (79 850)

Buy a small mirror at the drugstore or use an old mcy mirror. Make sure you have good light; then hold the mirror down on the right side to look at the sight glass while you are sitting on the bike and holding it exactly vertical. The reading is actually supposed to be taken on the centerstand, just holding it up straight like this is pretty close.

Right after your next oil change, run the engine just a miniute or two to get oil into the filter. Let it sit for a few minutes; then take a reading on the site glass as describe above to get the reference point for when the oil is exactly at recommended quantity.
 
OK. So I (at least temporarily) overcame my various mechanical problems and refilled my machine with the specified 3200 mL of oil, without touching the filter cover. I enlisted a helper and bubble level to get the bike uproght, and I still cannot see the oil in my sight glass.

Should I ride or add oil?

Aha! :D

As it turns out, my bike was pointed up the driveway, putting it on an ever-so-slight incline. according to my level, it's about 1/4" up per 6 inches lateral. Anyway, I righted it as best I could and was happy to see the oil level right in the middle of my sightglass. So I topped it up to the H line, a hundred mils or so.

When I previously overfilled my oil I was also on this incline.

So now I'm glad I had a coke instead of a beer just now.

Road, here I come!

Man, you're having one heck of a time with oil in your bikes, what with overfilling, stripped oilpans and the like. Hope you get things sorted out! 8)
