A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Painting my 83 gs1100e

There are a good number of YouTube videos about removing runs, some good, some scary. There's another way of using a razor to diminish a run, by using it like a wood hand scraper at almost 90 degree to the surface. I also like to grind off the sharp corners to a rounded profile as well and wait for the paint to fully harden and avoid pullout.

All of the mentioned techniques work, cutting, scraping, sanding. You probably should grab a can of Krylon with some throw-away items and paint some runs as a practice medium before working on that beautiful work you and your dad did.

The bike looks amazing Trevor especially with the new Yoshi pipe!, congratulations

Turned out really nice.

I'm not a big fan of the style of cast wheels on my '81 and the black paint/coating on the wheels looks like a good way to go.

Well done.

I realize you have meant to maintain the bike close to stock, and despite that it looks about the best slightly non-stock around.

Awesome work! Please send me your wife's phone number so we can discuss the sale.

Dang that's nice! That bike was slightly let down by it's paint close up,won't be now.Sure you can't come out for the Sunday "coffee run?

Sweet. Very sweet. Is that your ride to the rally?

Thanks Sandy, not sure which bike at this point.

Turned out really nice.

Thanks, yes I think the powder coated rims totally changed the look of my bike for the better. Thanks JWhelan for selling them to me!

Thanks, as it turns out I like this colour even more...no "purple" tinge to it in the sun.

Lol...my wife is loveing all the comments about her little prank!

That is a fine looking ride. Your dad and you did great.
Thanks DB, I appreciate that!

Thanks Greg, I have plans already to ride with a co-worker today then taking my wife out for a ride. Soon buddy, would love to see the 1000!

No problem Trevor, figured you'd made plans.Going to the Wheelies swap meet next Sunday,no table this time.More to talk bikes as the usual H-D crowd will have tables.More goodies in the"parking lot":D Want to see that 1100 to!

So the bike is complete now. Yesterday I had it wet sanded and cut and polished. My guy was able to get the little dust specks out and also take care of a couple of runs in the clear coat.
It's not perfect but awfully close and nice for a garage paint job.
This is a bike I will keep for the rest of my life. It's cool to look at it now and know that my Dad painted it for me.:)

Now I'm happy.:)

Very nice. I like the polished gas cap as well. Did you clear that as well? Keeps from having to polish it. :)

Trevor, how effective do you find that fairing? Does it stop much wind at highway speed? Do you have to crouch down behind it on the highway for it to be effective?

BTW, bike looks awesome!

thanks,
Daryl

Looks spectacular. Someday I hope mine will look near as good...

Hi Daryl, thanks. The fairing works quite well. You have to crouch a bit to get the full effect but it takes lots of wind off my body which makes for a way more enjoyable touring. I put it on last year just before going to Sandy's in Cranbrook for the gs rally. Glad I did as it was cold that week. So to answer your question it does a fine job, of course it doesn't do as well as a big windjammer fairing but the bonus is that I think it looks great on the bike and like it belongs. Great improvement for under $100.:)

Thanks buddy, I polished the cap a couple of years ago when someone on here said "you know that's brass under there"? lol...and being the Magpie that I am....:)
but no clear coat....I just use some autosol on it once in a while, takes but seconds to polish.
And thanks for your help and tips in this project, your help was very appreciated and used.
Cheers,
