Painting my 83 gs1100e

There are a good number of YouTube videos about removing runs, some good, some scary. There's another way of using a razor to diminish a run, by using it like a wood hand scraper at almost 90 degree to the surface. I also like to grind off the sharp corners to a rounded profile as well and wait for the paint to fully harden and avoid pullout.

All of the mentioned techniques work, cutting, scraping, sanding. You probably should grab a can of Krylon with some throw-away items and paint some runs as a practice medium before working on that beautiful work you and your dad did.

I'm not a big fan of the style of cast wheels on my '81 and the black paint/coating on the wheels looks like a good way to go.

Thanks, yes I think the powder coated rims totally changed the look of my bike for the better. Thanks JWhelan for selling them to me!

So the bike is complete now. Yesterday I had it wet sanded and cut and polished. My guy was able to get the little dust specks out and also take care of a couple of runs in the clear coat.
It's not perfect but awfully close and nice for a garage paint job.
This is a bike I will keep for the rest of my life. It's cool to look at it now and know that my Dad painted it for me.

Now I'm happy.

Very nice. I like the polished gas cap as well. Did you clear that as well? Keeps from having to polish it.

Trevor, how effective do you find that fairing? Does it stop much wind at highway speed? Do you have to crouch down behind it on the highway for it to be effective?

Hi Daryl, thanks. The fairing works quite well. You have to crouch a bit to get the full effect but it takes lots of wind off my body which makes for a way more enjoyable touring. I put it on last year just before going to Sandy's in Cranbrook for the gs rally. Glad I did as it was cold that week. So to answer your question it does a fine job, of course it doesn't do as well as a big windjammer fairing but the bonus is that I think it looks great on the bike and like it belongs. Great improvement for under $100.

Very nice. I like the polished gas cap as well. Did you clear that as well? Keeps from having to polish it.

Thanks buddy, I polished the cap a couple of years ago when someone on here said "you know that's brass under there"? lol...and being the Magpie that I am....
but no clear coat....I just use some autosol on it once in a while, takes but seconds to polish.
And thanks for your help and tips in this project, your help was very appreciated and used.
