Petcock to add reserve to my 1980 GS750E....

Has anyone found a petcock from a different year or model GS that fits the '80 model 750?
Don't want anything fancy, I like stock Suzuki type with the the vacuum feature, I just want to add a reserve position.
Thanks,
Tom

Good luck. Use the links people gave you and buy a new one. Use your trip on your speedo and your fuel guage.
I really don't think they make one that will fit.
Maybe Pingle can help.

Hmmmmm...

The Suzuki fiche for this model shows two different petcocks -- one with a lever and one without. Veddy strange.

The routing of the hoses looks a little different, but unless the hose would hit something, I bet there's a chance the petcock with the handle would bolt right up. Any ideas?

By looking at the diagrams (by the way Brian, where are you pulling these drawings from, would like to get that info myself), It should be a direct replacement. Routing shouldn't be an issue as there is more room to move and route with the petcock using the lever. You may need to loop the line to get to the inlet tee, without kinking the fuel line.

I don't think the lever petcock will work. It is a really tight fit. I also have an 80- L model and with using the stock petcock I still kink off the fuel line sometimes if I'm not careful.

The lever petcock does appear to take up significantly more room vertically (note that the vacuum disphagm appears to be horizontal on the leverless design and vertical on the lever model), but it could work if there's a wee bit more room on the E model tank and the carbs/engine. I believe the patient is a 1980 GS750E, not an L model. It could be a $41.19 gamble.

As far as how the image got there... here's the geek talk. (I make a goodly portion of my living by building web sites, so this is all pretty familiar stuff to me.)

I got the information and diagram from the fiche at http://flatoutmotorcycles.com/fiche_select.asp . For the diagram I posted, I saved the image to my computer (right-click, save as) then reduced it to 50% with Fireworks (or Ye Olde Photoshoppe), then uploaded it to my web site (It's stored here: http://bwringer.com/gs/images/gs750_petcock_fiche.gif ).

Copyright violation or fair use? I don't know, really. It could bring them some added business, but if anyone at PSN or the dealer really cares enough to ask me to stop doing things like this, I will. I'm not leeching it from their servers.

The online fiche is a service provided to many power sports dealers through a company called Power Sports Network. They also build and host most dealer web sites, which is why so many look so similar. The dealer simply chooses various pricing and display options, then adds a PSN page to a frame within the dealer site. The fiche is hosted and run through PSN's servers. If you right-click on a fiche image and open it in a new window, you'll see that it's hosted on a powersportsnetwork.com domain.

Thanks, bwringer, I'll try it.....

I'll let you know if it fits in there. I don't have the bike here now but from pictures I think there will be enough space.
I'll let you know how it turns out.

If it's an L model it will not work. If it's an E model it might work but I'm not sure. On the L model the #1 carb is too tight for a larger southern petcock. It's real tight.

Edit: Open your eyes Bill (me) it says E model in your post title.
Sorry

I changed a leverless (1980) 1100 petcock to a (1982) 1100 lever petcock and it fitted OK..

Terbang, can you please measure it for me???

Can you tell me the distance between mounting bolts and how far it hangs down below the bottom surface of the tank? I may have to dent my airbox just a little bit for it to fit.

Also a nice close-up picture or two would be very helpful.

Thanks!

My 80 petcock has a hair distance between the top of the #1 carb.

Carb clearance is no problem...

In this pic you can see it only comes close to the airbox, which is plastic and can be reshaped a bit if neccesary. I'd just like to know how tight it will be before I order the parts.

Can't see it very well in the picture. Looked at mine this morning and is pretty close. Nobody on here ever tried to put the lever petcock on a 1980 GS750E? Wonder why it's on the exploded microfish view? I replaced mine in 1994 with the stock screwdriver type, the prime quit working a long time ago.

Can't speak for a 750E, but I am in the process of doing the same thing on my 80 1100E. I am unable to dry-fit the new one because I have to widen the tank hole for the fuel mast ever so slightly (<1mm).

I compared the old (lever-less) petcock off and compared it to the new one ... there doesn't appear to be any difference in the the vertical heights (from the bottom of the tank toward the airbox).

When I have a chance, I'll pull out the digital caliper and verify.

If you measure the bolt distance you should be able to pickup a matching aftermarket petcock assembly (with or with out the vacume valve).

Ironically while trying to drain my tank (didn't feel like fusing with dumping the tank upside down) I used the PRIME feature on my leverless petcock to drain the tank through one of my carb drains (worked so-so, there's a small vacume leak on the line which leaves the valve open for about a min or 2 before closing, which is more then enough to fill the carbs but not enough to drain the tank). I discovered that I sort of made a "reserve" because of the routing of my fuel line went up higher then the lowest point of my tank and since liquids typically don't travel uphill I was left with some fuel in my tank... Not that I think this is really usefull (try lifting your tank while crusing down the highway) but it's something to keep in mind while looking for a reserve feature and routing your fuel lines; you might get a reserve but if your line is too high it will be near useless.

My 81 750E has a OEM petcock with a lever. I thought the only dif in the 80 and 81 tanks was the paint job.

I guess I should have paid a little more attention when looking at the new unit.

After removing the old petcock, cleaning the area with a wire brush (the previous owner went crazy with blue RTV), and widening the hole for the mast, I found that the bolt patterns are not the same (old = 50mm, new = 44mm).

It would have been nice if the fiche would have had any hint that they were not the same ... as it is, if you overlay the two units, the bolt patterns are an exact match.

Argh.

Get a Pingle. You'll have reserve and a beautifully crafted lifetime fuel tap.
