  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. pingel replacement fuel valve

I have a 78 gs 1000 and when I bought it someone has a gs750 petcock on it and the fuel outlet rubs carb one. It requires a tight bend in the hose coming out. ive been checking

out the vacuum style pingel replacement from z1 enterprises. Does anyone have anything good/bad to say about this or using one?

Only negative thing I'd say about the one pictured is the fact that it's a vacuum operated petcock. Being new it shouldn't have any issues but if the diaphragm starts to leak later on you can get fuel in the crank and the cylinder providing vacuum runs rich. Sometimes you don't notice for quite a while. It's an issue around here simply because older bikes have older parts.
I own a Pingel valve but its not vacuum operated. To be safe, I turn it off after every ride. It's no big deal as I was raised on older dirt bikes and I never forget to turn it off or turn it on. I like the fact that there's one less possible problem and that's important to an owner who thinks long-term. I've owned the bike since new ('79GS1000E) and the Pingel is now 11 years old with perfect operation. My valve appears to be made very well and operates smoothly with zero maintenance so far. Only negative about mine is that as of 11 years ago there was no rebuild kit offered to the owner. You had to return it to Pingel and they would rebuild it. So if you had no spare then you would have to wait X amount of days to ride again. I have no idea if they've changed anything by now.
If your choice is the same quality then it's a good choice in a vacuum operated valve.
 
By the way, I also bought the fuel line from Pingel. It's very similar to "surgical" rubber and lasts a long time and keeps most of it's suppleness (doesn't get near as hard as many other types of fuel line). It's also semi-clear which I prefer too. After 11 years it's still good and grips so well I don't need clamps, though I do use a plastic tie-strap on the carb end. No clamp of any kind on the valve end, not needed. Good fuel line. Be careful of other basic fuel line. Some will crack and fail within months. Some last a long time but harden and are difficult to remove/replace. Cut the line the correct length and you won't have any kinks or bends develop over time.

Unless you have your heart set on the one you showed, the Pingel I own looks better, at least to me. I forget the exact part number but I have the polished "round" body valve. It adds a trick look. Mine was $90. Mine also has the fuel port facing directly at the carbs. The one pictured has both ports facing at 3:00 which makes less sense to me. The exposed tubing will make it look less clean.
Installation note: I used 6 wraps of teflon tape to get mine to tighten up the way I wanted and have the valve face correctly. The tape has worked well for me.
One other note you may be interested in: my valve required an adapter plate to be mounted and then the valve went into the adapter plate. The screen/tower was a tad too wide on the Pingel so I also had to file away about 1/8" of tank material to allow it to fit (which Pingel did say could be necessary). They supplied a sealant for the plate that had very specific application instructions but worked well.
Installation mod was NOT difficult but I thought you should know my valve didn't come "plug-and-play". The one you pictured may/may not need an adapter or any light modding.

I have the same one. Works fine for me. The big downside is the fuel port is facing the wrong way, the fuel line has to make a fairly tight turn so you have to run it a different way than originally. For that reason I probably wouldn't buy it again for my 79 850. For it to fit my 79 850 tank I had to widen the holes on the tank, simple enough. It fits directly onto my 78 1000 tank though and the bend isn't quite as tight, but it's still facing the wrong way but is working perfectly. Hope this helps.
 
Well I'll go against the flow (no pun intended). In my opinion Pingels are crap with a capital 'K'. Every one I've had has either shot its rubber o ring in no time at all or leaked down through the lever. In fairness Pingel have replaced them FOC each time but replacing crap with crap doesn't make things any better.

Others have faired better but I can't believe I'm that jinxed.

Pingle has a letter/number code that is the specifications for every petcock they make, in either stock or custom configuration. The code specifies, the finish, material (aluminum or steel) and denotes the location,orientation and diameter of all outlets and whether the unit is vacuum or manual. They will make any outlet orientation, size or finish petcock you require. There are aproximately 50 stock models that can be bought off the shelf, so having to make do with something that isn't quite suitable for your application should not be necessary.

Pingels are fine but they look a fair bit different from stock and the cost is 3-4 times as much as the one supplied by Z1. And I don't think the one from Z1 is a Pingel, I can't imagine it is at that low price. I've had my Z1 petcock on the bike for over 15'000 KM and she's still working great. I figure I've gotten my money's worth out of it so far.

Wow that is surprising, mine has been high quality except I had to file the gas tank opening to get the screen to fit in. Therewise seems to work fine.
 
The originals still seam to be available at a terrible price..

Actually, my "nappy" time seems to be extending more and more. Hard to tell where it starts or stops. Kinda like it.
Never had a ducky or a bear. I wanted a saber-toothed-tasmanian devil or nothing at all.:twistedevil:
