A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Pretty nice barn find!!!!!

Got it all back together and set the timing per the manuals directions.

Had just one little drip from the stator cover..so Im will remove that and smear a little 3Bond on it to seal it again. I was too hot and tired to "F" with it anymore today. Anyway, heres the pics. One got cut off because I think the shutter stuck on the camera. In the next post I will post the video.

Just went back to the first postings of the engine area. WOW!!! What a HUGE difference some elbow grease and some cycle loving gives a bike!!! I am well pleased withn the way she turned out.

JOE!!!!! Youre KILLIN ME!!! I just got around to getting the points done and havent been riding it but a week again!!

You dont want this Cooley..I mean she shows her age and wear from the last 33 years or so.

I was watching you and Rich barter thread..almost ( and I say almost as like in for a second ) PMed you on that Nighthawk and VFR..but then I came to my senses.

So you dont want it? :D

Okay Chuck, you told us about the leaking stator cover, but what's up with the dirty right rear shock?? We can't have that can we? ;)

She came out nice. With only $800 into it, you need not worry about being upside down if you ever do sell it.

Rusted too deep to get it all out...I am looking for springs. Gotta polish up the fork lowers too. By "done" I meant she is reassembled and back up and running. Theres still some tweeking to do..

I was only jerking your chain...

I know you. Until it's all spot on you'll never rest.

Oh and by the way, if you recall I saw your Cooley when you first got it. You under estimate how well she looks for being 33 years old.

DALE..Your a very generous man..thanks.

The TXs shocks are actually real nice still, just that the springs are chipped and rusted. I cleaned them the best I could for now. I ordered a new NOS stator gasket off the Bay. In the mean time, I am gonna clean the old gasket with brake cleaner and apply a thin smear of 3 Bond to each side and reuse it. Have the one I mordered as a spare on the shelf.

I most likely over tightened it and got a leak. But tioght to me is locked inn place to most other folks!! I really need to get me an inch torque wrench.

So what do you think of the before pics from when I started the thread as compared to how she looks now? I cant believe its the same engine!!

Nice work Chuck! She looks vastly better. I only remember 3 of them from the 70's and they were all the gold color. Never seen any other color.

Very nice indeed Chuck, definitely a good effort there and you should be proud!

Rode the bike home from my storage unit...and am off on another ride. Had to come get my leathers. Man she runs nice!!

First ride and more pics

First ride and more pics

Well I must say she runs a lot better and smoother now. Put just 25 miles on her and came back to take a few more opictures for you guys.

Maybe an XS but not this one Todd. I just dont believe there are very many still left running. I may be wrong, but the consensus of all that I have talked to say its pretty rare to see one let alone a road ready one.
