Sorry for the confusion. On doing more research, it appears most of the complaints of clutch drag come from early 750 & 850 owners.

How does the 1000 clutch get it's oil feed? I know that the basket is of a larger size/design than the 850's but it's oil feed is obviously different too.
Also, basket rattle seems common with the 1000's but not so on the 850's!

49'er.. I don't wan't to get off topic, but where can I find more info on the clutch drag? My 750 is an early model & I've had continual problems with this and no amount of adjustment can solve it.

can you tell me about your clutch basket. where did you get it did it have to be trimed down?

I don't know much about the clutch. I posed the question here:

http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?p=875025#post875025

I bought this and the head, jugs, and pistons from the same guy. This was all stuff that had been sitting on his shelf for a long time. The head, jugs, and pistons have never been installed. The clutch basket looks like it might be new too, but the fibers and plates look used. All this stuff came with a receipt for the porting, valve job, and boring from 2002.

It fits right in, but I don't know much else about it. :-k

Pm me. I'll give you a fix. You'll need to do some machining though!

Last night I put the stator rotor on and forgot to check to see if that brass washer that's behind it was facing the right way. So today I had to buy a 16mm bolt and take it back off. Sure enough, it was on backwards. All fixed now.

I'll hopefully have time tomorrow night to get the pistons in.

I was originally going to go with the black motor and polished side covers. But I've decided to go with all black with chrome hardware. So I've got some side covers to get painted, too.

Bruce,

I didn't check with the company that did the work, but I'm now certain the forementioned pieces were powercoated and not chromed (as evidenced by the fact that one of the bolts they coated chipped) In hindsight, chromeish parts should be chromed and not powdercoated, but for certain pieces I can definitely see the value in a "chrome" powdercoat (like my rear calipr hanger). Let me know if you want more info, and I;d be happy to call them.

Best,

J

Thanks, JC! If you could find out what brand/color that powdercoating is, that would be great! It looks awesome!

Hmmmm..... I wonder how a frame would look in that color with the black engine? :-k

Still waiting on the little rubber cushion so I can put the clutch on so I can put the side covers on so I can squirt oil on the crank so I can put the pistons in.:-\\\

Got my little rubber thingy installed. I had to modify the case a little to give the clutch basket some more room.

Pistons installed tomorrow! bought some cams and they should be here this week. I'll get those in and get them degreed. Then the motor will be pretty much all put back together. Next on the list will be rebuilding the VM29's and getting the old motor out of the frame, and get the frame ready for the bracing mods.....

Oil feed?

Oil feed?

Nice pics of the clutch assy. That release rack sure looks like it has a hole through it's centre for oil feed!!

Now, keep in mind im still soaking up all the knowlege of these motors before you shred me here, but with those mods, and since you had the cases split, would it have been that much more expensive or completely unnecessary to have the tranny back-cut? I dont suppose you plan on doing a bunch of holeshots with this thing, but wouldnt it help the tranny in the long run or make it more clunky for every day ridding?? Just curious and wanting to absorb knowlege. I plan on ripping apart a couple 750 motors this winter, a 16v and an 8v.

It's drilled like that on both sides, but the holes are only about 4mm deep.

I debated whether to get the undercut gears and decided not to. They already are undercut to a degree. The 1000 tranny is strong and smooth. Unless you plan on romping on it 24/7, from what I've read, it's tough enough to handle anything else.

Cool, was just more curious for my own knowlege, not questioning your tactics at all. I am not all that up on the understanding of the tranny itself. Topend, gotcha all day, but Ive yet to peel one apart and see how the gears are set up and what not. Were you to do it, would you want the dogs undercut or the gears or both? As was explained to me, the biggest problem run into is the gear dogs themselves rather than the actual gears, so THEY would be undercut so that they meshed more precisesly the harder they were used. Again, i dunno bout this stuff so im trying to learn :) BTW, I will be watching this threat intently, as if your other beautiful machines are any indicator, this will be one awesome project to behold. Please supply with pics and explainations as frequently as possible!

Here's some info on undercutting from APE:

http://www.aperaceparts.com/transmissions.html

Honestly, I don't see much difference from their pic to mine. They must cut a steeper angle when they undercut, but you can see that the dogs on mine are already cut at an angle.

I'll be taking pics and posting through the whole process. This thread might drag out a bit, as I will be picking away at it probably all winter. I hope to have this bike done for spring. If I keep plugging away, I should make it. Still a few parts to obtain, but I pretty much have everything I need. I just need to do the labor.

She going to be fast AND pretty!

One more cover to paint.

Still no pistons installed yet. I decided to get a new cam chain guide and a manual tensioner. Once I have them I'll get 'er done.

The VM29's are going into the dip this weekend.
