I just purchased a fairly nice 1988 GSXR1100 for a great price. I will be doing the suspension swap similar to Posplayer but can I use the GSXR swingarm instead of a bandit one. I know I will have to have the shock tabs welded on plus it seems a little longer than the stock swingarm? Also I plan on using the carbs. Is there anything else I can use from this bike? It has a Kerker 4 into 1 as well. Any help from you guys would be appreciated. I am hoping to start this project as soon as the snow flies.

Cheers

You can use the arm if it will physically fit into the frame & you can live with the extra length ? (you dont say what bike you want to use the bits on )

It depends on which carbs its fitted with as to wether its a good idea to use them & of course the bike they would b going on, you would need pod filters in most cases

The kerker will have the same port spacing as most gs's but may not be a direct bolt on although it may work with some messing around

What are you swapping? GSXR suspension to a GS (if so what GS?)or later GSXR suspension to the Slabbie?

BTW Tone is the expert here ; I'm just a practitioner of 1. :p

Sorry Guys
The bike I have is a 1982 GS1100ez. I have been following Posplyr's thread and when the opportunity with the 88 GSXR came up I took it.
I figure I could grab everything off it I needed then sell off the rest later. The swingarm is about 1-1/2-2 inches longer (rough measurement) and the carbs on the GSXR already have pod filters on them and the carbs have been jetted. I got the rest of the dynojet kit and original jets from the PO. I know if I switch swingarms I can't run the original exhausts or I guess I could run the GSXR rim in the original swingarm. Just trying to figure out what to take of the GSXR.

Well hopefully you have those highly prized 18" 3 spoke wheels; they are a bear to find straight.

Forks, brakes, swingarm (if Tone says it will fit but obviously needs mods) wheels. Except for a Bandit swingarm that is what I used.

What exhaust does the GSXR have? (pics would be nice) The SS Muzzy on my 86 GSXR1100G fits very snugly under my GS1100ED. Mid pipe would need modding but the header fits. Also there is a good chance you might have the 36mm Slingshot carbs. Are they 34 or 36mm? The 36mm are preferred and ave an oval inlet.

Dont ever ride the 88! You will fall into the trap I did; I decided to turn the GSXR into a street fighter.

Good Luck; great score. If the plastics are any good, they are worth money.

The other thing is the rear brake master; You gonna run rear sets? I moved the bandit swing arm over if you recall so custom spacers were required to retain the stock setup. I think a single 1" spacer on the sprocket side. Remember the 88 1100 wheels and sprocket carrier are unique. The 86-87 sprocket carrier will not interchange.

Yes it has the 18" three spoke rims. The exhaust is a Kerker 4 into 1. Overall the bike is in really nice shape. Runs good and has about 48000kms on it. (will get pics of it up later) I do want to run a stock set up and not use rear sets. I will have to play with the spacing like you did to get things to fit. I think you are right and I might end up keeping the GSXR after the swap and putting newer GSXR suspension on it.
Oh the madness!!! lol

I have a 17" set of wheels that might be needing to move on in the next few months....

Dan :)

Here it is guys. I do want to change those white rims to black.

It's a crime to tear up a classic like that. Can't you find something more worthy of parting to steal the suspension off of?

You can't hack that nice slabbie up. I WON'T LET YOU DO IT!!!!! I'll hunt you down. Port Bruce ain't that far. :D

But seriously, don't. That's a beautiful bike that I would trade my first born for. What did you pay for it, and where did you find it? The only ones that I've found are a complete POS that the owners think are made of solid gold bricks.

Sell it to me for a paltry sum. :D It'll go to a good home where it will be rubbed with a diaper every day.

Well that looks like a beautiful nearly bone stock bike. While, I would not hesitate to put 17" wheels and rubber with 91 USD forks on it (like my own GSXR), using it as a parts bike seems a shame. If you need a swing arm, the Bandits can be had on ebay for less than $100 as long as you do all the same work in conversion there is no additional cost for getting a upgraded GS swinger..

It is a tough call as I'm in the process of street fightering my GSXR1100G, but it was no where near that original. The riding position is too extreme for my old bones.

Well guys it won't really be a parts bike as I beleive I will keep it and replace the components that I take off with more modern parts. I have been looking for a parts bike or pieces for awhile but like Rudy was saying everything I looked at was priced like gold bricks. At least if the GS "borrows" some parts for awhile I could always return them to the bike.

Paul,
As I mentioned the 91 USD forks and the 17" wheels are almost a bolt on for for the 86-88 slabbies. IIRC, there is a little work on the upper triple clamp to get the ignition key lock to engage and dealing with the clock mount . Mine uses the 2nd gen clocks which I like the look of better anyway.
That would free up the 88 forks/triple and those 88 three spoke wheels for the GS.
Attached is a pic of Long_Av8tr's slabbie with USD/17" wheel. Next post will be triple with the stock clocks.

Good Luck
Jim

Slabbie cockpit with USD forks and stock clocks. This is a well established and much sought after conversion for the Slabbie. It is the 91-92 GSXR 750 forks that are preferred for the conversion.

I still don?t get it Paul. If you want a GSXR with modern suspension, just buy one. That first gen GSXR is a rare gem and more valuable the way it is. I say leave it alone, or sell it to Rudy, and find a late model GSXR parts bike to steal the suspension off of.

Ed,
Yea the 1st gen GSXR'ers are a rare gem but the people that want them ususally dont have any money :(. If they are perfect then there is a collector somewhere but otherwise and unfortunately not a whole lot of demand.
Jim

Your right Posplayr.
The guy I bought the bike from said I just caught it in time as he was going to keep the bike because of all the crazy low ball offers he was getting. He had guys come look at the bike, hear it run and still offer him an insulting amount for it.

Cheers
