Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Repairing Fuel and Oil Temp Gauges?

The fuel and oil temp gauges on my 1000S are in poor shape. Took them out of the cluster and both have the exact same failure; the U-shaped piece that makes the needle bend is broken off where it attaches at the base. I'm not an electrical guy and don't know what this piece is called but the U piece has magnet wire coiled around one leg of the U with the other leg spot welded to the base. I was thinking about grinding off the rivets which will allow the face plate on the gauge to be removed, but replacing that U piece is going to be more difficult. Can I fashion a new U piece out of spring steel and use epoxy to glue it in place?

Any suggestions?

Oh boy...sounds like fun. I've not done it on a GS but it may be similar to a Honda I had, that found it's way to the ground more than once. :o

I was able to solder it back together using a tiny piece of a pop can as a "cast" for the broken leg. It worked very well, maybe beginners luck though. ;)

Thanks for the pic! Yep...looks to be the same

Been messing with that photo since it shows as vertical on my computer. I've rotated the image several times and no matter what it still shows as vertical.:(

At any rate, the lower leg of the U is the part that bends I think, when activated by the coil on the other leg. I'm guessing the calibration of the gauge will be off if the broken piece is splinted together no?

Yes in that case it would be off. You may be stuck with tearing into a donor gauge for the part. :( Is the fuel gauge in the tack cluster?

On the 1000S each gauge is seperate. It might be possible to swap in a fuel gauge from a different gauge set but the oil temp gauge will be more difficult.

Ed,

I have some spare small gauges from the 750 in a box that you're welcome to take a look at... They have the face on them etc. If they fit they're yours

Just crossed my mind when I saw this... poss the same?

Dan :)
