    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

replace exhaust bolts with studs

for those of you who have changed out your stock exhaust bolts for studs what size did you end up using? i searched the forum but never got a strait answer.

in particular I'm asking about a 81 750. i dont have the bike yet but it might be mine soon.
 
most of us swap studs for allen bolts. stainless usually. 8mm diameter and plenty of copper grease
 
just goes round and round... i just don't want to wear out the threads on the head. plus it had 2 broken off bolts that ill have to take out. lol
 
I used 8mm studs with copper anti-sieze and copper plated nuts on my 81 750. Found the link in a thread here. They are actually for a BMW car I think. Also, NAPA sells a stud kit that works great, just be sure to get 8mm studs

you wont wear out the threads. how often do you plan on removing the exhaust? decent stainless bolts, not overtightened and lubricated will not damage the threads
 
alright thanks for the info iv got some deciding to do
 
I've given up looking for the studs, hoping to find some stainless ones, I'm ready to settle for some polished 8mm stainless allens with lots of anti-sieze. The closest I got to finding studs was 8mm all thread you'd have to cut to length at ACE hardware.
 
NAPA sells a kit of 10 which are perfect. Comes with Nuts too. I've installed them on several GS bikes. Only 13 dollars

The links no worky -- all you get is some useless crap about needing a zip code. Man, what a punk web site. You'd never know Napa was a large nationwide chain. :mad:

Anyway, can someone please post up a Napa part number or application? You may be luckier where you live, but around here you're gonna just get a blank look if you ask for 8mm exhaust studs.

Its not great but its a million times better than Napa Canada which doesnt appear to have half the stuff of the US version and the website is so much harder to navigate.

I would'nt mind a part number too, Napa up here have so far proven useless. I am in Montana next week and wouldnt mind picking up a set for the future.

Those links work fine. Just click again on having the parts shipped to you. I did this mod a while ago and I am very glad I did. The thread size is M8 X 1.25. Mine are 43 mm long. I cut them from stainless threaded rod.

Here is stage one of my solution:

Going to cut the heads off then put them in using a couple of nuts locked to tighten them in.My 85 750 seems to need longer ones,these are 50mm.
 
I need to do this on my 1k. Like others have said, a Napa part number would be just Awesome!
 
why got to the bother of buying bolts, sawing the heads off, fitting them as studs, buying washers and more nuts when you can just use standard allen bolts with lock washers and standard washers with a bit of copper grease? seems like a waste of time effort and money to me
 
McMaster Carr has 8mm SS studs. Just do a product search. Im not sure how long youd want them. But seems youre looking at roughly $2 per stud in 18-8 and about $10 per in 316
