If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Rotor replacement

Cidcammi

Forum Newbie
Hello all,

New to the forum. I just got my first bike, 1982 GS400E. The bike seemed totally fine at first and was in really good condition, fully rebuilt, all original parts. However, I recently come across a charging issue with the electrical system that I’m still looking into. I have been doing a lot of tests with the multimeter and I am fairly certain that the rectifier/regulator is fine and at first I thought the stator could be in bad shape, but most of the readings are good. The only thing is that the voltage is a lot lower than it should be coming from there. This led me to believe that it could be the rotor that is causing the issue or bad connections/wires. Me and buddy are hoping to get a better look/diagnosis this weekend but I’ve been looking online and I’m having trouble finding a replacement source for the rotor. Some of the prices I’ve seen for a replacement of the same part number have been as high as $600 and I’m wondering if anyone know where I could find a suitable alternative or cheaper solution. Thanks for any advice

Hi and Welcome to the forum - where are you from?

With reference to the "the rotor", do you mean the charging stator?

Upload some pics when time permits.

Canada. Yes and no. I’ve seen some different terminology; rotor assembly, generator etc. in the attached diagram it’s labeled as #3.

Do you mean pictures of my bike or something else?

Rotors almost never fail. The only times I've heard about them failing it was because the magnets came loose.

First step to fixing a GS charging system is getting an SH775 R/R. Don't buy a fake, make sure SH775 is printed on the top fin. When it comes in, wire it like this.

In the mean time, check the stator for output across each pair of legs. The service manual details out this check. If you get less than 70 VAC, your stator is likely bad.

I think you meant well with your comment but I asked specifically that I was looking for a solution for sourcing the rotor. I am aware that the R/Rs are sub optimal and that it still could be the stator which is why we are doing a more thorough diagnostic this weekend. I’ve already done all the voltage testing with the multimeter as I explained. I’m looking for rotor replacement sources so that I am prepared after the problem is confirmed

ROTOR ASSEMBLY
  • Part number:3140233400
  • Supersession:i3140245030
  • Fits to: Suzuki
Searching 31402-5030 shows it fits the following models. You can search ebay for a replacement. I'm not sure if any aftermarket replacement parts are available.
