    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

"S" stock exhaust

My '79 "S" had a Kerker 4-into-1 on it when I got it. I also picked up a European "S". The title says 1980, but it looks like a '79. In any case, I was told that the stock pipes would have a serial number or part number with an S in it. The pipes on the red "S" are stamped, but there is no part number nor is there an "S". I thought that the bike was bone stock, but now I'm starting to wonder. Can any of you learned folks enlighten me.

Do the stock pipes on a '79 have a part number stamped on them at the back and if so, should there be an "S" on mine? Any reason the Euro version would be different?

Whatever that is stamped on your pipe looks very American to me. We didn't get that or anything like it on our bikes.
 
I believe those pipes are service replacement pieces.

The 1979 1000S pipes seem to be the same part number as the regular 1000C/N/E pipes. Given that, I don't understand why they would have any specific S markings on them. I've seen some exhaust pipes with an S on them, but it's an angled S intended to reference Suzuki.
 
The '79 exhaust has no reference to years that have not occurred yet.
It would say 1979. ;)

Just what Ed says.
The last NOS pipes that were available had that info on them.
And just as Wally says, the original Euro version pipes had just a few numbers just aft of the heat sheild, the muffler was clean of stampings.
All that stamping just spoils the look of the pipe.

So, it would appear that I have NOS pipes rather then the originals for the "S" bike. If I find a set of pipes with no markings on them, would they likely be correct for the bike? And that said, would anyone have a line as to where I might locate said pipes? I want to keep the bike fully stock when I do the restoration.

I don't know about any specific markings for a "S", but I agree with what Eric says here.

It would say something like "THIS PRODUCT CONFORMS TO US EMISSION STANDARDS FOR 1979 MODEL MOTORCYCLES..." or something vaguely similar. :o

NOS is/are originals just that these will be the supeceded part available. The only place you might find some will be if someone is flogging some old good condition ones, they do come up occasionally but are very scarce these days.
I had a very nice red/white 'S' the previous owner before the guy I bought it from only bought it to rob the pipes for his build.
I have seen later sets of mufflers like yours go on the web for ?1600 but that was years ago.
 
All the pipes that I've seen have markings.

The pipes for my 1000ST are shown below. I'm not sure if the S is to indicate the 1000S or just a coinsidence. The black chrome pipes are from a 1100S Katana, yet have no reference to S at all.

Don't know, I'm not at home to look at mine, but that looks a bit different still to the original UK ones, From memory it has the numbers and the warnings about excessive noise quite discreetly just after the heat shield together with the angled suzuki 's'.
The last available Europe kind had quite big letters stamped over quite a large area at the back of the muffler as to how I think of American type set ups.

That's how a UK one looks.
But withoit looking I couldn't say about the markings.
I have a perfect original set of mufflers that I got for my mint HC that I've yet to get round to put on, I will check those for markings when I get home, though I'm pretty sure it will look like yours. Your one seems not to have the angled 's'.

These are the only pictures I have here but you'll have to look closely.
The first is an original pipe its ever had. (still covered in its preserving grease)

You can make out its stamping on the back of the muffler and again aft of the shield. (looks horrible)

My thanks to all of you for the education. I have another set of pipes that came off an "E" stored away. I may have to break them out and see how they look.
