second drain plug not draining?

timebombprod

Forum Sage
oil level is over full before i start it, still not starting till i make sure this is okay, i was trying to drain some oil from the second drain plug near the shaft drive and nothing came out,is it because the engine hasnt been on and oil hasnt reached there yet?

Yes, it's separate oil in a separate compartment & should be filled with 90w hypoid...

wat, i beentold it was a seconddrain plug

thats why mine takes more oil than a chain drive, right?

its right under the transmissioin

its the big bolt left of that wire connection

okay shoulda just checked my manual.....while i was right i guess i was wrong second guessing myself, just tryna be careful. just weird as to why no oil is there but its cuz my engine hasnt ran i suppose

I?d guess that the second drain hole in your pic is above the level of the drain plug in the bottom of your oil pan. So if you took the oil pan plug out first, maybe you?d see little to no oil come out the higher drain. I looked in your manual, and I believe you?re right, it does appear to be a second drain for engine oil. I find this very strange, never seen an engine with more than one oil drain hole. But I?ve only owned 5 different bikes and am no mechanic.

make sure you have new crush washers (Suzuki calls them Gaskets) for when you re-install both of those drain plugs. They are single use, at least I?ve always treated them that way. Others may reuse them, I won?t.

No, NO, NO!!!!

That is indeed, a second drain for ENGINE oil. It is unique to the 650.

Do NOT use 90w hypoid gear oil.

I have never tried it, but I would GUESS that if you have not run the engine after filling with the proper amount of oil, there is a POSSIBILITY that there might not be much oil in the rear compartment. I am not sure how the oil gets into that compartment, it MIGHT be pumped there by a running engine. Since you haven't run the engine, there MIGHT not be anything in there.

tipped it on its side to see if thatd work an it did, so theres oil sitting in there now, wont be pressing starter button till tomorrow as its 12:15 and neighbors are all sleeping

Sounds the same as the XJ900F - the front bevel drive oil is actually shared engine oil with its own drain plug. Ideally, to perform a full oil change both drain plugs should be undone, but meh. There's never much comes out of the bevel, so if it's forgotten about it's no biggie. The bevel drain only gets the last few mils of oil out, so compared to the quantity of a fresh fill, it's negligible.

Everyday is a school day I guess :)
Got me thinking about that engine oil leaking into the box on the 850.

oops, already said but-

I think he's got a 650 and these don't have a separate compartment. They just use the sump oil.

because the engine hasnt been on and oil hasnt reached there yet?
likely, but not much oil comes out of the second plug in any case.

goto your profile settings and Put that you have a 650 somewhere or mention it at the beginning of your post. And then i won't have to trust my memory.

My 79 engine seal failed between the sump and the front bevel box. I was only aware of it when I routinely changed the bevel oil and it came out black, without the slightest trace (or smell) of gear oil in it. I went on for many thousands of miles after that, with it being lubed by the engine oil. When that engine was eventually stripped for the leaks and the 2nd gear jumping fault, the bevel drive was perfect.

Thanks for that. I change everything every spring and yes it comes out blackish but still a hint of cat pee :)
Putting light truck diesel oil in the crankcase is probably helping.
