Hey eveybody I have boughten two used starters from guys that have claimed they work and one was from here and even showed me a video of it in a clamp and he hooked it up to a battery

Ok so here is the problem. I put the starter in the same way the old one came out( just slide it in the hole)then I hook up the wire and bolt it down. is there something I am doing wrong? or is the starter he showed me bad? like it will spin freely but not under load? I am at a loss here and thinking I should just buy a rebuild kit.

Thank you
Jake

Issue may not have been the starte int he first place.
It may be your electrical components that the starter is attached to.

are all your grounds clean, fuses good, starter interlock switch working properly?

what exactly ahppens when you try to engage the starter can you hear the solenoid clicking?

How's your ground wire connection from the battery to the engine? Clean? Tight?

Your solenoid could also be a problem.

Why not try a really simple test or two...

First...do you have electrical power at the starter connector

You need a voltage meter, not a circuit tester. A digital one is preferable, but a sweep-type will do nicely.

Check the voltage at the battery, and note the voltage reading.

Connect the red lead to the starter connector and the black lead to ground, either to the negative battery terminal or on the engine itself.

Turn on the ignition and press the starter button. The meter should read full battery voltage.

If it is less than the full voltage then you have either a connection or solenoid problem

If there is no reading at all then you have a circuit problem, and all connections plus leads to and from the starter switch will have to be checked.

If it is full voltage, then check the starter,

Get a wire test lead and connect it to the positive terminal on your battery.

Literally sit the starter on the other side of the battery where it can touch the negative terminal, but not come close to the positive one..

Now touch the positive lead to the starter connection.

That will show you whether or not the starter turns, although it will not show how well it works.

The starter may spin at this point, but not well, which would indicate worn brushes, and that is a normal thing as all brushes wear down with use.

These are easily replaced and the best place I know of to get them is Stockers.com Buy the plate, with brushes attached.

If brushes are worn down or worn out , a clean-up of the armature will also be needed. Usually this can be done with a piece of emery cloth. Be very careful when doing it to avoid touching the coating on wires.....that is their insulation.

BEFORE
opening the starter to do any repair look at the starter carefully. You will see a marker on the body and on the cap. These marks must line up when you reassemble the unit.

Im going to have to agree that its likely YOUR bike at fault, and NOT a SECOND starter. Maybe ive just been lucky, but *I* have yet to see a failed starter on a GS. Ive seen starter clutches that were a couple spins away from literally exploding, ive seen primary gears with teeth missing, bad solenoids, faulty wiring, etc etc, but ive NEVER seen a bad starter. Ive seen a horse fly. Ive seen a dragon fly, why Ive even seen a HOUSE fly...

I believe ill have seen bout erything when I see an elephant fly....

Hey Josh, want me to send you a BOX of starters that don't work? I just changed one out of a GS650G yesterday & now the bike is fine! I will say that in THIS guy's case, though, the issue is probably either his starter relay or the starter BUTTON! Do any of you ever check the contacts in the button? That is the FIRST place I check. Ray.

simple is best.
fully charged battery.
bike in neutral.
take a screwdriver and go across the 2 post on the solenoid.
if the bike cranks fine...
the problem is before the starter..

RUN FOREST RUN!

Did i say it didnt happen??? I dont think i did. I sometimes wonder if i speak a different language than you Ray:D I have seen LOTS of "my starters trashed" threads on here. All *I* said is *I* have never been unlucky enough to see a bad starter... let alone TWO replacements in a row...

Josh, my point was about you never having seen a bad starter & me having a BOX of them. It happens, just not as often as some people think. Ray.

Oh..right! Gotcha. Well...as appealing as having yet ANOTHER box full of parts in my garage for me to move around is, im going to have to take your word for it. Lord knows the last thing *I* need is something else that needs worked on... :D

I know there is power getting to the starter (I wired it up to the bike its self and it spun out side of the bike) but when I put it in, it makes a sound that to me sounds as if it doesnt have enought power to crank the engine. So as little as my braind thinks at night the only time I have to work on my bike all I did was check my fuses and replaced one that was still making a connection it just looked really crappy. So hope fully tonight I will be able to check all the connections and grounds and see what I can come up with. if I do have low voltage what can I do to get it higher?

Thank you
Jake

do what i posted above.
if it cranks the engine ok then the problem is before the starter.
