A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Seized carb slide! Any ideas?

Got my set of new orings to clean up the carbs on my 84 GS450t in the mail and tore into them earlier today. Everything came apart easy enough and the inside of the carbs where covered in a fine tan colored powdery substance, no goo at all. The carb slide seems to be stuck in the down position and after a little coaxing with a screwdriver and trying to pry it upward it doesn't want to move. Shot it with some carb cleaner and needless to say with the diaphragm still in place I'm hesitant to just drop it into the carb dip. A couple of websites suggest heating the carb body with a propane torch, soaking it in marvel mystery oil, tranny fluid, invoking the spirits of aincient Greek goddesses... you get the idea. I'm thinking that boiling in plain water is safest on the diaphragm but if anyone here has a better idea, I'd appreciate the input.

Use heat. It will break down the varnish. Just be careful to not overheat the diaphragm.

Along with the heat, lift the edge of the diaphragm and spray some carb cleaner around the top edge of the slide. As it warms up, will allow the cleaner to seep down the edges.

.

Heat gun would probably work best, but propane torch should work fine as long as you take it easy.

Thanks for the quick replies. After your responses I decided to go with heat and did the hot water thing, took about 15 minutes and it slid right out.

DO NOT use screw drivers on slides folks !! Get an old toothbrush and grind it down on a bench grinder. Use the plastic as a pry..never use metal anything.

As you may have noticed, the issue has already been resolved. I'm well enough aware of how easy it is to mar aluminum and distort a thin walled metal tube which is why I chose to ask for a different idea. Next time though I'll be sure to force it open with an old rusty tire iron first to assure that your suggestion had merit. Thanks and ha e a great day!

Look Homie ( yes I am a native Michigander for nearly 50 years ) my post was intended for the "general audience" as an FYI. No need to take it personally.

I'm east side D born and bred, I ain't angry, I'm from Detroit! Serious though, if you make it up to HL in the next few weeks there's a beer in it for ya. After that I'm going to get lost for a few months.

You mean after it might get to be over 40 degF sometime.... maybe....

This winter has hung around WAY too long that's for sure. We had a foot of snow last week, ground was clear before that happened. Been camping out in summer the last three years, the place I'm in is a seasonal rental so it's time to go by memorial day weekend or pay tourist prices.

Ah yes, long gone family ties down that way. Grew up in Warren, left in '81 and traveled with my job then settled in Traverse City to raise kids. Sold everything and left there in '12 and moved to 9 & Mack for a bit, still have plenty of friends in down that way.
