  • Returning Visitors

poor thing is back outside. running pretty well too. brakes are still ****house and i think the battery is on its way out.

went for a run with the local VJMC guys yesterday with a honda hornet, XS650 and a RZ350. she didn't disgrace herself. only two people "used ta have one a them when they were new" and know some friend/relative/neighbour/themself who has one languishing in a shed. replying that it's a bloody stupid place to keep them rather than getting them out and enjoy it elicits a variety of responses.

not much left to do then i can get anna back. planned a 5000 kay trip for her in june.
 
if the weather holds, taking her for a run tomorrow with a bloke on a 850 commando in JPS colours, and looks like dad might come along as well. first paired suzi run since i took the katana out for the weekend last year. the two are always a blast to ride back to back. same cubes, totally different natures.
 
am sick of work eating into my free time so even with old mate on the commando falling through, we headed out this arve.

both pulled like trains and gave a nice change to the working week. swapped bikes at the halfway point and was delighted at the variety. love the gsx and all, but was quickly reminded why i took the shafty to sydney and back.

good day overall.
 
Nice pictures Glen. Good to see your getting out with them. Yea, work does seem to get in the way of riding. Your comments on the two bikes is making me want to get mine up and going. Once again work is getting in the way and lack of it is also limiting. Cheers!

the 1100 won't make your world stand still charl, but it's torque will let you think you could reverse its direction. many things do many of it's tasks better but what a great all rounder!
 
gsx is cold. chilling some scotch now. pipes go on in an hour. oil and filter change happening tomorrow afternoon cos i can get the filter in and out now without needing to drop the headers. ****ty that they weren't made properly in the first place 16 months ago but they are going on. looking forward to the performance of non crushed rusted primaries and the note of dual mufflers.
 
am loving the new sound! sexy in stereo and no more leaks to affect the gorgeous howl.

my replacement gs/g bevel gears have arrived. hoping maybe motivation takes me, by sunday to begin the reassembly. just can't wait for my hands to reek of diff oil.:rolleyes:

we're on to round 2. as expected, as i tear into it there's maladies appearing. there's welding on the tappet cover, improperly fitted airbox boot spreaders, a shoelace as a battery strap, badly routed cables, and bent bracketry. most looks easily rectifiable so far and the chaindrive motor can donate whatever is needed. hoping regoed bit before easter with a 1000 kay round trip planned for it early april. got one set of carbs apart and am making a start on the second lot.

the clustered black lumps in the bowl are in three of the four carbs. and, they are ants. i've never seen this before but i'm hoping it goes a way to explaining why the choke operation is so bad at present. has to have been through the bowl vent hoses as the airbox was sealed effectively enough and the needle and seats mesh filters wouldn't have let them through. she'll keep her factory wheels a bit longer as the tyres aren't too bad but i'm still keen to see if the 1100G tubeless rims will slip in but no need to disturb them yet.

have the exhaust off and a mate has offered to TIG weld the holes and cracking. its not pretty at present but this is his staple trade and i've seen his work.

a customer is donating a rolling 88 gpx 250 kwakka chassis and i might pluck some basics off it. it's master cylider may see use and theres always good use for spare metric bolts.

gsx750 fell through but am chasing up a pair of dead gpz900r's that will make one and pending import approval a pillaged but running RE5. heres hoping.

four by the feel of it charl. one running and complete, one parts bike with complete motor and no bodywork, and two basket case completes that may yield from 2.5 engines one good motor. comes with a new gasket set and i'm hoping to try build three from four.

shed room is still not yet a factor. but i better stop soon.
 
and, we've struck a hiccup. after closer observation and engine number checks, the 650E and 650G motors i have are different years with different heads and camcovers.

won't affect the changeover of the entire top end if needed and have rotated the chain motor and it's thankfully not siezed.

looks as if the clutches might be interchangeable too so i might strip the E down to basics of all i can use and lube it all up and rid myself of the bottom end. surprisingly the inner clutchbasket spline is the same size as an 1100. i love how over engineered most suzi stuff is. followed immediately after with dismay at some of the crappiest factory wiring and connectors i've ever seen. oh well, can't win them all i guess.
 
katrin is rego'd. the previous owner is a lying douche as the battery isn't charging. and now my tyre supplier has sent me the wrong size. it's maiden roadtrip is looking in the too hard basket already.

bought a spares 83 650 and there's plenty enough good parts to warrant it's purchase.
 
trip made, highway fuel consumption is great. electrex came to the party thursday morning via post and stator and reg/rec are in and working well. new badges are on the stator and ignition covers. anti dive hoses are on and as suspected can't feel any difference.

pinging its **** off once fully warmed up under mid acceleration despite fresh fuel and a few degrees knocked out of the timing so may have the carbs back off soon. fine on constant throttle and in lower gears so could ignore it but i'm not wired that way. adding a set of plugs soon as well and single seat mod plate. hook shaped seat fits my body shape beautifully when ducked down and quite comfortable even after 200 miles.

found a few niggles i don't appreciate that i'll suss out as time goes on but overall a maiden voyage of some substance. will feel better once new tyres are on but still impressed with how she rides and pleased i bought it despite the lying seller. will ring him and give him a piece of my mind in the next few days. stator was the last straw.

anna scored a new tach last weekend and the gsx's old igniton barrel and now able to lock the steering and the keys don't fall out while in motion.

rode the two back to back wednesday and the contrast is amazing. 100 and a quarter cc's per slug missing surely tells a tale but you steer one and think the other through corners.
 
split commuting between five bikes this week. one per day. feels like value per rego dollar.

have collected my kwakkas and now need to consolidate and organise the sheds to allow work and storage to begin and coexist.

hope to rekit a 1100g master cylinder for the 650 this weekend as i love the brakes on it, and the current generic master just doesn't cut the mustard.
 
It's tough for me to keep track of your bikes. You need to post a family portrait someday.

yeah, got asked the other day how many bikes i had. six registered is the easy answer.

they wanted the hard answer and i honestly lose count. plus i don't count duplicates or parts bikes. should be ten on the road in oz once i'm finished. 3 honda fours from 400-1000, the three gs 4's, the mz, vincent, an rg250w, and a one from 4 gpz900r hotch potch.

the rd350 will only see the road every other year on my euro trips. my simson sr2 and italjet cx50r will never see road use and the dt200r is also deregistered.

picked up a spares katana 650 the other weekend with a good crank, gearbox and front and rear bevels. the cbr and gsx, are, with the mz and rapide not duplicated but all the others have at least the makings of a spare motor and most a spare chassis.

we have hit twenty three chassis. can scrap at least four of those and lose no sleep. might be time to stop.

katrin and anna have new front and rear hoops respectively. anzyela also copped a new rear and it all consumed merely a sixpack.

the 1100 rear eases out better if the muffler is removed. less hassle than dropping panniers and rear shocks.

tested the katana two up (and less than lightly loaded, neither rider or pillion are compact editions) and am less scared about the cb400/750 than before. only 63 cubes between the shaftie kat and hondas one size fits all K1, and i think 6 less horses at lower revs shall still be fun. expexcting my one out of four gpz900r will leave all in its wake, but each one of the fleet has upsides irrespective of power or speed. ran the rapide today and love it for what it is even though its flawed in ways known only to the english.

quite glad to have stopped collecting too i must say. concentrate on the current herd and go from there.
 
another weekend down and a thousand kay round trip covered on the katana.

found a few open roads along the way and let her sing a bit. very stable at speed even over bad pavement and despite the high average speeds, the tank reserve never showed up till about 350 kilometers. generally comfortable, great brakes, and never scary with its power delivery, and reasonably good lighting, i'm liking it for highways more and more.
