A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Signal generator?

So, the cover on my signal generator got ripped off in my wreck, and it looks like the innards took a bit of damage too.

I'm not really sure what this circuit does, and was hoping for clarification. I tried to start her this weekend, and the starter works, but it's not catching (seems like a no spark kinda situation). Could this be the culprit?

TIA!

it lets the ignition know the position of the crankshaft and therfore when to fire.

pricy items too

I think and aftermarket ignition might be cheaper if one can be gotten that fits your bike.

Crap, so then yeah, that would totally keep it from firing off. =/

I looked it up on Bike Bandit, $180 from them.

I found one in a parts lot ebay offerning
a whack of stuff for 19 bucks
it has yet to arrive and be tested though

a lot of things can be found if you do a very general search
especially leaving out the terms for high priced OEM items

it seems some wreckers work on a volume principal and others research the actual prices

got a cdi box two forks and a pristine wiring harness for 30 bucks the same way

I have a trigger from a 1980 GS1000G that could be had for the price of a beer or two ;)

Dan :)

Which of your bikes has the problem?

I'll definitely keep that in mind. =) I was looking as some of the pics I took of the damage on my bike, and it looks like I might be able to fix mine. I think one of the two pickups that are on each side of the crank is bent out of place, so it may just be a matter of bending it back so that it's reading the signal from the crank correctly. I'll try this out either tonight or tomorrow and let you know. =)

I have one if you need it from a 81gs750 I believe. Has a 1/2 moon cutout on the bottom of the plate. Check your timing advance unit too!!

Looks about right Calvin, although the part numbers on BikeBandit only matched on the 1000.

Just got home a bit ago from work, btw. Mine wasn't fixable, the black plastic pieces with the circuits in 'em are hosed.

Here in a few weeks when I'm actually healed up enough to start working on her, looks like that, a tach, handle bars, and turn signals are all I'll need to have her back on the road. =)

Post a picture of it just to make sure you don't have a Dyna ign..

if its for the 1980 750 then an 1100 16v should work also.
maybe have to notch it for the oil sender.
an 8v. trigger will bolt in but i would think the timing would be quite a bit different.
i have a small box full of trigger plates for GS 700-1150 @ 50 a pop.
