So, as I typed above, I did the carb clean as per this site, also the valve adjust 9after replacing 3 adjusters, could have done more but they were set right so I left them).

I also fixed the fuel guage by bending the tab down more. Yay, except I bought a new one from suzuki UK already, hopefully someone else can use it?

On to the problem, it is REALLY smokey, it isnt blue with the obvious oil burning smell, its more of a crazy rich smell, with a slight blue, mostly grey/black tint.

I only let it run a few minutes (fires right up, nice idle after a few min), is this winter start up normal? Or am I missing something???

I guess what I mean is, is it normal for it to smoke a bunch on the first start of the season, say for several short startups?

I iwll run it more tommorow, my daughter was sleeping so I couldnt do more today

Not sure why you would get smoke. After sitting through the winter my exhaust had some condensate in it. But that was white and it cleared up after a couple minutes.

Have you done any carb adjustments yet? I just rebuilt mine and was using a colortune to set the mixture screws. I still need to vacuum sync them. You can't just rebuild them and install without some adjustment.

I know, I set them to the haynes manual spec of 1.5 turns out, which would be lean if anything I beleive.

It did this pre carb rebuild and valve adjustment, when I asked then they said to do both those things and report back essentially.

done, still smokes, 90% of it from the left tailpipe

what should I check first?

Did you check #1 and #2 spark plugs for fouling? Did you replace the petcock?

If #2 plug is fouled with black soot, your petcock needs to be checked. Pull the vacuum hose from the petcock and plug it with a snug-fitting bolt or phillips screwdriver. Put the petcock on "prime" and start the engine. Idle it for a few minutes (if you have a large fan to blow air on the engine it would be nice) and see if it still smokes.

Sometimes an old petcock will leak fuel down the vacuum line into #2 cylinder (where the line is connected on your carbs). If it does this, your essentially running #2 cylinder about 50 times richer than it should be.

The exact same thing happened to me last year on my wife's 550. It had been sitting for years when we picked it up. Although the petcock seemed to work, it was leaky.

I will check this tommorow, made me go hmmmmmmmmm :D

Did you happen to use some gasoline stabilizer? Many of them will smoke a bit, especially if you used a higher than
normal dose (like I tend to).

.

I also thought about this, the PO may have as I am still on the original tank of gas from last fall, no way to know now she moved out east.

my wifes scooter was like this due to that reason. smoked for weeks.

If you thnk it might be the gas, just ride the bike, burn that tank low, fill it up with fresh gas.
If one tank of gas lasts for weeks, you really need to ride more.

Of course, you could also drain the gas and put it in your car or lawn mower, but it won't be nearly as much fun. :D

I always drain the stabilized gas out of my tank in the springtime and put it in my truck.

Now that I think about it, I started to do it because it seemed like the bike ran like poo with the stabilized gas in it, and maybe even smoked a bit.

But, heavy smoking from the left tailpipe only indicates an issue with #1 or #2 cylinder. Since he described it smelling rich, excess gas in one of those two cylinders seems to be the problem.

dammit, figures, I have been waiting for an order to ship for the last 6 days, the day I need to add a petcock repair kit is OF COURSE the day it ships out. Now I get to pay around 40-50 in shipping and brokerage fees for a $15 kit, anybody wanna help a dude out?

According to these sites:

http://www.cmsnl.com/suzuki-gs750-ees-1983-usa_model16049/partslist/95018.html

mine is the same as a 1983 GS750E petcock, anybody know a cheap place to get the repair kit and wants to stick it in an envelope for me?

or if there is a "cheap fix" ?

Right there in Canada for you, so shipping should be cheap. I've ordered from these guys many times and had good service from them. I think Part #20-0023 would be the one you need. You could call them to make sure.

Thats the place I was talking about above, they have a $50 minimum order, and mine went out this morning...

which makes me salty...

Ahh....I see.

Before you order anything, pull the vacuum tube off your petcock and plug it with something. Put the petcock on prime, and start the bike. If the smoke stops after a minute, you know what the problem is.

If it still smokes, you might have a stuck ring.

well fingers crossed then.

It didnt do this on the day I bought it, but it did a couple weeks later, and then a few months later which brings us to now.

god I hope it aint a stuck ring, this bike is gonna kill me before Ieven get to ride it!

ok, i need some help guys, I need the bike on the road this coming teusday, what do I need and how do I get it here?

stupid partsnmore will not take my money, $50 min purchase and I already bought everything they sell for my bike LAST order (shipped today)...

I will test this afternoon, but that sounds like my issue, I remember one of my plugs was wet, but not with oil.

Then it was (hopefully) wet with gas, which could be indicative of your petcock problem.

can I run it on prime and shut it off when parked?

I just need it next teus, took the car off the road last week and am already pushing my luck with the wife by taking her car this week as it is...

so, can I ride with it on prime? or is that dangerous? bad? something?
