and im quite confused. 81 gs850g. hit a dear doing 60. im alive. dislocated left shoulder, destroyed my right knee. lost a lot of skin and meat. and about 2 pints of blood. anyways. the thing im confused about is this. the bike hit a buck pretty much dead center on its side, and ended up hitting a telepone pole. ripped my handlebars in half. smashed both front turn signals. ripped the left muffler off. dented gas tank and front fender. smashed my speedo. broke my tail light lense. and put a hole in the left side engine cover. sounds like a lot of damage but its mostly cosmetic.... kinda. oh yeah back to my question. forks and frame are perfect. new handlebars and a new side cover and the bike will be ridable again. how can i hit a dear going 60 and only have that happen to the bike? on a plus side i got to see what my knee cap looks like and i didnt even put a scratch on my helmet. sorry if this doesnt make much sence. pain killers

Dang dude glad you are ok!

Hitting an object dead on especially something 100+ lbs is never good. Considering a 60mph impact you are very fortunate to be posting here.

Get well buddie!

Holy shnikees dude you are one lucky SOB. Start buying lottery tickets immediately !

Seriously, I am glad to hear you are relatively ok. Too many people lose it to Bambi every year.

Don't worry about the bike until your whole again yourself. I'm sure it can be sorted....they are tough old birds....just like the rider.:)

Get well soon and when you can, post some pics.

Cheers,
Spyug

I ride in deer infested country and have had a lot of close calls. You're fortunate to be alive, sounds like you'll be hurting for a while. I'm glad you were wearing a helmet. We lose quite a few motorcyclists around here due to deer collisions.

Now, your bike. It may look mainly cosmetic at first. Mine did when I crashed it, as did BassCliff's. There are hidden damages. When I put mine back together, I discovered the rear shocks were bent up. Luckily, if the rear end was tweaked at all, it wasn't enough to matter. The left handlebar stop on the frame had worn completely off from the force of the crash, and I had to do weld build up there to fix that. BassCliff's bike had the rear swing arm bent to the right and he had to straighten that out putting his bike back together after his crash.

The deer probably acted as a cushion for you before the bike hit the pole, that's probably what saved you, and made it where your bike is still repairable.

Glad you're still here to tell the story.:)

Damn antlered rats !!!!!!! Glad you're still with us !!

I had a friend hit a cow in a Jeep CJ, the cow cleared the grill of the Jeep and came right through the windshield and pinned him in the seat. My friend lived, barely....the cow did not. You're a lucky man.

Don't worry about the bike, get yourself healed first. Take it easy, enjoy the meds. The bike will be there when it's time to get it fixed.:)

So sorry to hear that man,

Very glad to hear you are alright. Skin heals and metal can be welded. Take you time in the hospital and with recovery first.

glad you are ok

glad you are ok

just looked at some vids on youtube showing this situation. yikes.
Heal well.

I'm already out of the hospital. And back to work. I work in a tattoo shop as a body piercer so my job isn't really demanding. Not gonna be piercing anyone till I'm off the meds thow. I will probably begin ripping her apart in a few days. I know I should probably wait till I'm all better. But the bike calms me down and relaxes me. Anyone got a left side engine cover they wanna get rid of? I have pretty much everything else I need

D*mn you are lucky!
Best wishes on the recovery. Any bone damage to the knee?

Eric

Do you mean the stator cover ? Or the side panel that says 850 on it ?:)

Last June, while on our anual tour, my brother in law hit a deer on Lolo pass on my formally pristeen show room clean '80 GS850G. The deer was killed, but he managed to keep it upright. We stopped for probably less than 2 minuits to pull the front fender off the front tire.

We were maybe going 45 mph.

I saw the whole thing in my mirrors. Man, he was lucky.

I've lost 1 friend, 1 relative, and three friends severely injured, to situations just like yours. :(

I won't ride at dusk-night anymore...

Glad to hear that you are getting a second chance.
Get well soon.

I guess it would be the stator cover. Its the metal one on the left side of the engine near the shifter. I also lost both of the plastic side panels lol. Looks like I just need that stator cover and some oil to get it running. As long as the frame. Swing arm. And forks are straight

According to Babbits, your stator cover is compatible with 77-79 750's and 79-81 850's.:)

hit a dear doing 60.
Blimey the deers in your country move fast !!!!!!
Seriously though mate glad you survived. I hit a rabbit once came off and totalled the bike. I might have a cover if you can't source one locally. Cheers Wayne

Yeah the dear here really truck along. And they don't even use turn signals. Oh well. He took off so I didn't get any of his insurance info either. I'm gonna hop on over to the local cycle salvage. Maybe ill just spend a whole day there and piece together an entire bike :)

Yeah I have insurance. But. No license and no inspection. So. I would probably get less from insurance than the tickets would cost me. So no claim was made

get better soon man, you were very lucky!
I have a set of the plastic side covers from my '79, which i think will fit(one has a broken post, but should be fixable) Let me know if you want 'em. :)

Vic

What would you want for them? I don't have a whole lot of money right now
