A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

So...if I hold the leads to my voltmeter in the general area of the stator...

...as in not touching the bike, 6" away from the stator cover or more...voltmeter goes ape...poop.

I also get a lot of interference with the pickups for my Vapor.

Any guesses? I'm pretty sure I need a new stator, or at the very least I need to update some of my electrical system, because I never exceed 12.9vdc. I've just never seen a bike do "this" haha.

That's probablyjust due to the magnetic pull. Is the engine running when ou do this? 12.9 probably indicates an R/R that isn't operating right.

The stator is a generator, therefore it produces an electro magnetic field.
When you hold the leads of your meter within its field it can pick it up as "ghost voltage or interference.

Yeah I know what an EM field is...but I've NEVER seen it this..."big" is what I'm thinking is a good word. It just extends quite a ways out there...most other machines don't emit anything similar whereas this one when I get the leads close to the stator it goes absolutely nuts...but I have a hard time getting a good reading anywhere on the bike and it screws with my Vapor...tach signal and speed jump all over the place.

Didn't really spend a lot of time thinking about my R/R...I'll swap that out and see if anything changes.

Have you tried another meter?

I've never had this problem with $3 Harbor Freight El Cheapo meters or several more expensive ones.

Is it an auto-ranging meter? Perhaps it can't decide whether to measure millivolts or volts.

To test a stator, you'd want to set a regular manual meter to the 200VAC range.

manual selection. The stator actually passes most tests when cold...I haven't tried warmed up. I don't really see any issues until I'm 15 miles down the road, but I never get the correct voltage from the start. If I have my high beam on my Vapor backlight goes pretty low anytime I hit the brake. Lots of fun.

Kinda irritated me...I was going to swap my R/R out...I know I've got three of them laying around (FZR600, GS500, and a TL1000) but none were to be found...
