    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Anyone know why the odometer knob has a different part number for an 82 850 GL compared to the 82 850/1100G models?

I am also looking for an odometer knob for an 82 1100G if anyone has one.
 
Yoiu can have mine....if you can find it! I dropped mine on Route 78 in PA on Saturday. It will be laying on the right hand side of the road heading toward allentown about 3 miles past the Kutztown exit! Darn thing popped out and slipped through my fingers while I was riding! I wanted to replace the guage cluster anyway.
 
My '82 GS850 didn't have the tripmeter reset knob when I bought it, so I used a Wolfcraft dowel peg that I drilled a small hole into (axially). The hole was just large enough to provide an interference fit when I pressed the dowel down over the knob shaft. A bit of flat black paint, and you'd never know it wasn't OEM -- and it never fell off.

Here's a picture of what I'm talking about, but I used the 1/4" variety of these. (I think it was about $1.25 per bag of 20).

Robert, quick quesition, is the knob a press fit or is it held on some other way? I want to get into my gauge cluster on an 80 850g.

I know mort. If I buy from flatout they'll whack me on the shipping. There is one on ebay (for a GL) for .99 and 2.90 shipping but it fits a 850GL. So back to my original question-why does th GL have a different odo knob?

LoL, my bad. I misunderstood the question. I gotta stop staying up so late :P

The knob on my 850G was a press fit. It took a pair of flat nose pliers and a good strong pull to get it off. Should be no problem to press it back on.
