I put a stage three kit on my 79 gs1000E and i am fine tuning it. I havent done one before and before yanking the carbs off again and guessing, I figure I would ask for some advice.
the bike has seperate air filters, (I have not spayed them with any oil), has a 4 into one header and no other motor work. The initial setting settings had me put the needle clip at #2 from the top with the washer on top of the clip. It ran pretty good but needed to have the air mixture screw almost all the way in(1/2 turn out). I then moved the washer to the bottom of the clip which they say is 1/2 a step richer. bike seemed about the same.
cold starts are weird as it spits and takes forever for the four cylinder to all fire up and come online. It runs ok but pops out the exhaust( not really a full backfiring) when I dback off the throttle from speed. I checked the plugs and they look gray.
My assumption is to raise the needle to #3 notch. What puzzles me is the stage 3 kit never offered a pilot jet increase. my question is should I raise the needle another half step richer or should I be looking at my pilot jet, or am i going wrong completely. Like I said ir runs pretty good but I think it can run better.
