As you may recall, Matt picked up a GL a few weeks ago. What we have done so far is as follows.

Tore down and cleaned / rebuilt all the brake systems. Had to replace the rear caliper pistons as they were well pitted.

I made adapters to remount the stock muffler. The PO had cut the bells that go over the header pipes off and welded on Harley Sportster mufflers. I went to Orielleys and got some fittings and welded them to the headers so the stock muffler could be made usefull again. I will post pics of that later.

Fork seals and dust boots done..new fork oil added.

Started to get the blue paint off the valve covers, horn, overspary all over the frame..just the whole bike needed the blue paint taken off. God aweful mess all the way around.

So the last few days, I have switched gear to start what we have dubbed "OPERATION BEAUTIFICATION". This involves finishing the overspray removal from the frame and stripping the blue sparkler paint off the body work. ( picture a navy blue Smurf stripper covered in heavy glitter )...now you have a visual of how ugly this bike was. Sorry I didnt take pics. maybe Matt has some he can add.

So it took better part of two days stripping the body work and sanding the filler down on some of the fiberglass parts..side covers and side shelters had some dings that needed addressed. So here are the parts as I have them sanded and primered right now. Second picture is the color the bike will end up as.....STAHLGRAU 333. Its a BMW color that Matts loves..hence his screen name here.

Havent sanded the body work down yet for the paint. And PROPS go out to Larry ( Nvr2old ) for his PM tutorial and a former member here thats also a painter Aaron. AKA Revelations.

Good too see you bringing the bike back to life.

Hope you post the progress on NGW.

you could get a better pic by maybe placing the parts on a beige or light brown background. I forget the term but the exposure latitude thingy maybe screwing things up.

Just snapped a few shot as the bike sits right now..note the blue thats on the timing belt covers. Now picture the ENTIRE bike that crap. And i mean everything!! Points housing, fuel pump, all the tank enclosure parts, side covers, valve covers..over spary all over the engine block and frame!! Just horrific.

We will get better pics once I paint the body work Jeep. Ive still got a lot of clean up on the frame and engine with the over spray..as the picture well shows what these 'artists" had done!!! Good day at least just removing that alone.

Still picking away at it. IF everything goes right, I hope to have all the main body parts done Friday afternoon. Then switch up and do some finish sanding on the 2 radiator air scoop panels. Will post up some pics soon as I get the main body parts done. Its looking really good so far!!!

Shot the last pieces ( color ) this AM. Wait 5 or 6 hrs and will shoot the clear. Finish line is in sight.

All done. 2 coats of clear. Finish polishing needs to be done but Matt is in charge of that phase. He has polished cars and will be my teacher on this aspect of the overall process. I, and Matt, are well pleased with the results. I took some out in direct sunlight pics and drug the rug into the shade of the garage for comparison.

Fire`away with comments and suggestions as this is my first round with a spray gun. thanks to Rustybronco ( Dale ), Nvr2old ( Larry ), and Revelations ( Aaron ) for the support and technical advice.

Todays festivities included removing the paint and epoxy off the timing belt covers and polishing all the covers. Got the carbs out and used degreaser and a tooth brush to clean all the grease and crud off the outside. Radiator and fan shroud removed also. Needs to be paint stripped and repainted..my next " to do " on the list.

Looks good, Chuck. Any stripes in the forecast? Those are big panels. Factory-like stripes would look really nice.

He just wants plain panels Larry. Thanks for the response. I got a lot to learn but so far so good..HA HA. He will have new tank badges and the new side cover emblems though. He already has a new sticker that goes around the fuel gauge. Soon as he gets the finish polishing donw he will add the details.

Dale told me yesterday that I could have been a little easier on myself had I had a 1.3 tip. I shot these with a 1.6 which is what was on it when Dale gave me the gun years ago. I had never used a gun before till this and didnt know the difference. Maybe I can find a 1.3 for it before I venture further.

Its a Snap On SF 700 gun.

Radiator and fan shroud painted this AM. Need to get the over spray off the water pump and oil filter cover and it should be about ready for some reassembly.....unless i find more hidden treasures!!!

Carbs cleaned up and flat black paint taken off the carb tops and the intake tubes. Blue paint removed from engine covers and shined up.

Its a Snap On SF 700 gun.
Slight correction. It's a BF700 which is a Sharpe SFG98 HVLP in disguise.

Agreed.

This would be the time to add them. Sand the clear, put down the stripes and reclear.

If he decides to go with the decal kit at a later date I can just sand and add right?? By later , i mean say he mentions it in a month from now.

When you polish it you will be removing some of the clear. If you go ahead and sand it later you will be removing even more clear. With two coats of clear applied it doesn't leave you much room before start sanding into the base coat. My opinion is, either you polish it and call it good, or sand and apply any stripes now.

Well he originally said leave them plain so thats what I did. I will relay the info. If he wants them then he needs to either dont polish them right now or stay with the original plan.
