I like what you've done with the bike. Your attitude reminds me of Jesse James when he first started making his own bikes. He made what he wanted and could care less of what other people thought. Do what you want and enjoy the results.

To lower the rear end did you just use short shocks? I used 11" shocks on my GT550 but they say not to use them on touring bikes over 900cc and 850 is pretty darn close ;) Just wondering cause I am looking to do on purpose what you did on accident before you started modding again ;)

I just took a set of 11" shocks off of my 850, and replaced them with the originals. I found that the rear wheel had been rubbing on the underside of the fender, and I had bare wires leading to the tail light. I will be putting the shorter shocks back on when I get the custom tail lights fabbed up (and the wires out of the way). I have found that even using a shock rated for a heavier bike is not enough to keep the fender off of the back wheel. I am going to experiment with heavy duty springs. When you shorten the springs, you increase the leverage on the shock. This effectively lessens the spring rate. If the heavier spring doesn't work, I may end up moving the rear shock mount towards the rear of the bike to keep the stock angle.

Yea thats what I was afraid of :( These are the shocks I have on my GT550 I wanted to order for the GS850: http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/rear_shocks.htm

Bottom of the page.

All chrome 11" short shocks. Come with eye to eye (pictured) or clevis bottom mount (Honda's and some Suzuki's). Works on mid size and smaller bikes 850cc and smaller. Not recommended for Touring or heavy bikes, like 900cc and larger . They will work on KZ900/1000 too with single rider so there are a few exceptions. Appr. 440lb loading weight

That's lower by 1-2" in back, 1.5" up front,

I raised it back up in the back to beyond stock height. I'm getting there, and it's gonna be cool as hell.

how did you do all this lowering and raising of the rear end??:-s I am wanting to try some different looks in height, but I don't know how to change that height without new shocks or, blocks, or some kind of major surgery.

You cant change the height of the rear end without some sort of change like short shocks or frame mods.

Well since I'm waiting for some primer to dry and I've got about 4 cups of coffee in me , i thought i'd see if the new 3gig bps dsl kicked in yet. It seems a blur of motion on my monitor but that could be because my eyes haven't focused yet. Lets hope this damn thing doesn't freeze up and crash anymore.

Anyway i thought I'd weigh in on the "isaac has an ugly bike" debate as i found it funny as h*ll the first time I read it.

Make no mistake issac, i'm on your side, at least more so when you had the dresser fender on the back , but thats another issue. Now unfortunately you do have an ugly seat, of this I am certain. The shapeless blob comment had me rolling. but enough of remarks as i'm sure you get the picture.

Now the "Mad Max" approach you've taken should work and its an interesting concept. I'd go with it as its not been done to often and could work well. I would say however that even a rat bike can be done right. Why do you think they wank 50k for the one you had pictured. My advice is that you may be going too fast to finish the concept without paying attention to the details.

You know, little things like bondo on the side of the tank where the suzuki badge was. Maybe a stubby fender etc....

Anyway i liked the dresser fender and I'm sure I'll like the new concept as well. My 2 cents. And please keep us posted as to the progress. We all like a rebel in action.

Isaac lowered his by chopping the springs of his rear shocks. I went out and bought a set of shorter shocks. They make lowering blocks, but they will not work on a shaftie. Other than those options, I don't of any other way of lowering the rear of these bikes. The issue that you run into with shortening the shocks is that the steeper angle on the shock effectively lowers the spring rate. You have to get a variable spring rate shock that is very stiff at the compressed end, otherwise you end up with the rear tire rubbing the fender over big bumps.

Isaac: I dig the bike. Keep it up. It's like functional sculpture.

KGB: You do tend to speak with a forked tongue - IMHO

Uncle Mike & Miss Fabulous: You two are a riot - Get a room! LOL

I really like the front end and the lowered rear. I think when I move and get the new garage setup I will grab another set of 11" shocks for this bike and see how they go.

I liked the original fender you had, if you want to let it go send me a PM with a price and I may take it off your hands for experimental purposes :)

Isaac, i know you probably dont care about my opinion since we dont know each other and never will, but i really like your bike.it makes me think of exile,my favorite choppers in the whole world. But,doesnt water spray on your bike withno rear fender?Ron B

My wife really likes Suzuki's M50LE, with a duck tail, Harley looking fender. I got to admit that I like it too.

does look sweet ! nice to see somthing other than a cafe bike, out of an 80's motorcycle...

Nice.... Very nice! You give me hope for this beast i just got... Forgive me all, i'm no pursit for 80's stuff... i was born then, and i'm glad i dont remember it...

But yeah, cool stuff man \\:D/

At the risk of bringing a topic from the dead with this post....Issac i like where you are going with your bike. I had the exact same sort of idea in my head for my GS1100G. However im going about the rear in another way by changing seat styles mostly...I have been looking at some of the airtech tails and some of them have integrated fenders as part of their design.

Heres one style of tail i think would set your bike off nicely in the rear
