A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Stuck Jets

I’ll have to remember the Torx bit idea, but I have always used a left-hand drill to extract them.

.

Turn the bit SLOWLY. Let it dig in, rather than spin out all the chips.

.

A heat gun isn't enough. You need at least a propane torch, if not oxy-acetylene.

.

That's the problem with the internet: so much conflicting advice. A heat gun, a propane torch. A propane torch will ruin it, but a heat gun isn't enough.

Who is Steve? Also, pictures incoming.

Have you read the thread? I'll include his comments for you again

Steve is the man with the experience and facilities to fix your carbs.
There are others too.

A local shop, Brenny's Motorcycle Clinic, charges $100 per carb, for $400 total.

How much do you know about this "Brenny's"? Do you know "Brenny" himself? Any of his mechanics (like the guy who would be doing your work)? Have you spoken with any of his customers? Do you know how long he's been in business, current location or elsewhere?

Local is nice, but selfishness (enlightened self interest) is the order of the day here.

You've read (or should read) Steve's detailed explanations of the workings of carbs. You can also read testimonials and reviews of his work, along with photos. Haven't read a bad word about Steve.

Now try to gather similar info on "Brenny". I'm sure you have demands on your time and I doubt that you live across the street from Brenny. But if you did, I'd say plant yourself in a window and watch. Is he busy? Do the people coming and particularly leaving seem happy or not? Do bikes leaving his shop sound like they're running good? You don't want to be a pain, but pass by and hang around as much as you can. You can get screwed locally as bad as from a thousand miles away.

For most of us long timers, Steve is a known quantity. Brenny, not so much.

You've got your work cut out for you. Good luck.

It's not really local, per se. It's in the next town over. As such, I haven't been able to view their work (as it's in a back room), but the online reviews are generally good.

Remember, those can be manipulated. Word of mouth is good - you can generally tell if someone is lying to you.

That is true. I also don't have a truck or trailer. I'd have to rent one, or buy a rack. I got a trailer hitch for a 2006 Ford Escape, but I don't know how well a rack would work on that, being front wheel drive.

ZPS take stock please, you have been given excellent advice by some to contact Steve and ask him what the cost would be Steve has many satisfied customers and you will struggle to find better.
I know who I would go with as opposed to a shop that you do not know has a website that has reviews that may or not be true.

OK, I'm trying to figure out who this "Steve" guy is that everyone is talking about, too. :-\\\

Obviously, I have not been checking this thread often enough.

ZPS, I got your PM, will respond to it. :encouragement:

Alright, I got the old jets out, and the carburetor fully disassembled. The old jets have holes in the sides, the new ones don't. Is that ok? Also, the threads don't seem as wide as the old ones. I hope they still fit.

I usually get my jets from Jets R Us.

However, ... looking at Nessism's link, it appears that not only are they cheaper at Dennis Kirk, it appears that you get TWO jets for that cheaper price. If that's true, I will be getting my jets from DK from now on. :encouragement:

.

Does it have to have the holes? What do those holes do for the GS550, as opposed to the non-hole ones?

It's hard for me to find the exact words, but I think you know what I'm trying to say.

The holes are there to mix the air from the pilot air jet that is in the intake throat. Without the holes, you will not have a "mixture", only a limited quantity of "fuel". The rest of the carb is calibrated for mixture, it won't know what to do with raw fuel.

Bottom line: you need the bleed holes on the sides of the jets.

What Steve is politely trying to say is, you don't have the correct jets.

Get the correct jets at the link above. What you have won't work.

Progress is good.....
i almost hate to ask this but.....no mention of mixture screws in your fun with pilot jets....have you removed these?

I have not. Someone before me removed the caps that were over them, though.
