    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Suzuki GS 750 Shaft drive oil change/levels ?

Hello, I have just bought a............

Suzuki GS750G Shaft Drive 1982 Japan only, imported into UK in 1998.
basically all GS850G bits except for the engine cc size

OK, I know I need hypoid SAE 90 oil, It says on the engine and rear shaft housing.

How do you empty the front shaft drive gear compartment and what level do I fill it to ? Do you remove the gearchange from the shaft and take off the cover plate to get to a drain bolt ?
And............
What level do you fill the rear shaft drive housing to ? (the drain bolt is clear to see at this end)

OK, I know I need hypoid SAE 90 oil, It says on the engine and rear shaft housing.
If you can't find a straight 90w hypoid oil, it's OK to use a multi-weight. What I have sitting on my shelf right now is a can of 80w-90. You might also find 85w-90 or something else similar. Anything near 90w will do, as long as it is marked hypoid or gear oil.

Yes. To check the secondary drive oil, it is not necessary to remove any covers. My book says to open the fill opening (directly behind the starter cover), then open the oil level screw. The oil level screw is at the back corner of the engine, between the gearshift cover and the driveshaft boot. The one on my 850 is a 12mm hex-head, with a Phillips drive in the middle. To drain the oil, you need to remove the gearshift lever and cover to access the drain bolt. My manual calls for 11.5-13.5 oz. (340-400 ml.) of oil for the secondary drive. Whatever the amount, the book says it should barely be coming out the level check hole.

What level do you fill the rear shaft drive housing to ? (the drain bolt is clear to see at this end)
The drain bolt is at the bottom, obviously, and the fill bolt is at the back. Manual calls for 9.5-11.2 oz. (280-330 ml.). Again, it should be at the bottom of the fill (level check) hole.

Here's a GS850 engine with the gearshift lever and gearshift cover removed and the drain, fill, and level bolts highlighted. You do not need to remove the alternator cover -- this is just an old engine I used to take a picture.
