Hello!
I just saw a 1986 GS450 with the left caliper and disk installed from a SV650!
They just bolted right in no problem! im wondering if this might work on my 1980 GS450, and if it may be possible to use the rear brakes of an sv650 to upgrade my drum brakes to disk brakes? any insight would be great!
Thanks,
Dennis

keep in mind if you want rear disc you will most likely need a new swing arm with disc brake mounts svs are monoshock rear so that will require some creative fabrication. if you want disc rears youe are better off looking within the gs series

Interesting to know! A 550 swingarm if any would probably be the most likely, but it would need to be measured etc...

Thanks!
Im going to start with the front end, ill keep you posted!

Please do, it's always good to know what fits these as most mod's are only for the bigger bikes...

ok, I got all the parts.i noticed the banjo fittings are smaller on the Cv65o caliper etc.., so i guess Ill have to use the master cylinder+brake from the SV650 as well. i had hoped just to attachh my steel braided line to the new caliper.
Ill have to find a suitable brake line for this, becuase the SV650 brake line is meant for two calipers.

Pretty sure the lines themselves are the same and you'll just need a custom line with the right size bolt on it.

ahh, so I can just get a different sized fitting that would thread into the same steel brake line I have?

Be very surprised if they are not 10mm standard banj0 fittings... I have a set of those brakes on the shelf I believe.
They do use a 12mm wrench on the bolt not a 14mm though...

Thanks! It looks like its 10mm, but my 10mm banjo bolt doesn't thread into the caliper. I think the threading is different somehow on the SV650.
Do you think there is any advantage of using the Master cylinder from the SV650 or can i just use mine?

It'd be better to use the SV unit with the SV caliper, newer is usually better. Banjo bolts seemed to change pitch somwhere in the 90's, from 1 to 1.25, or 1.25 to 1.5, I forget. My Katana front end was the same, different thread pitch on the 10mm banjo bolts.

It's from 1 to 1.25.

I'm going to guess the master cylinder is a slightly smaller piston bore on the SV which I believe means a little more travel but more pressure.

Stock is 14mm, I'm guessing the SV may be 13mm...

I'd definitely go the SV either way as long as it's in good nick.

I would definitely go with the SV master cylinder if you're swapping caliper/rotor. The MC is designed to move the proper amount of fluid to move the SV caliper with the proper pressure. It would be interesting to find out, though, how well it stops compared to both the stock SV with two discs, and the stock GS.

All you have to worry about is piston bore size which is clearly marked on the master cylinder.

In this case I think you'll find it is 5/8" which is the same as the bore on the Suzuki Dual brake models.

The single brake model Suzuki uses a 14mm piston & people have used it with twin brakes but you'll find you need more lever travel for a given amount of brake & more of a "Mushy" feel to it I suspect.

Good call Dan, didn't realise the SV was a dual disc setup!

Side note... did you end up looking at the Salty Monk conversion for the 450's yet?

Djg42, have you considered getting forks and just doing a dual disc upgrade? Just an idea......

And can I request pics once everything is bolted up?

Thanks guys!
I am considering getting the forks and doing a dual disc setup, but the chart below indicates that 1980 GS450 fork diameter is 33 and the other GS forks are bigger (is that correct?), not sure how Id make that work-unless I can find some other bike with 33mmforks and dual discs
forks are larger,

Sadly, the SV650 brakes aren't plug and play at all, and will require the same amount of work as using any other modification.
Ill definitely post pics when i get some work done on this.

I couldn't find the salty monk GS450 conversion mentioned, how can I find it?
