    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

tachometer drive problem

I have a GS850 i got as a basket case.

The tachometer drive in the cylinder head appears to have a male end.
The cable screws into the tach adapter, and the cable inside appears to have a male end. They obviously dont mate.

Is there supposed to be a little metal female to female adapter in there?

Picture maybe?

I didn't find anything on the bikebandit fiche.

If I remember correctly, the drive in the head has a flat blade.
There should be a ferrule on the end of the inner cable with a slot that fits over it.

A new cable is cheap, but don't get it from Bike Bandit, they are the second most-expensive site, after Alpha Sports.

if you get a new cable, you might as well order up a new seal and o-ring for the drive gear too. It's a 5 min job to swap them out. better to replace them now while you're there and thinking about it then have oil leak all over everything.
 
Nope, but thanks for the link. I think the ferrule fell off. I guess that's another repair i have to make.

good thing the bike was free, with all the repairs i have to make...

Many of the newcomers will recoil in shock when we suggest what will fix their problem, and say "but that costs more than I paid for the bike!" :eek:

So, the general idea is supposed to be ... don't do anything that costs more than the purchase price. :D






I tend to go against that line of thought. My philosophy is "the less I pay for the bike, the better I can afford to get it going". :p

I agree. I paid $0 for my 850, and spent about $800 on it. It was worth every penny. Had I spent $500 on it, I would not have been able to get it roadworthy as quickly.
