    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Test for my speedo drive

If i were to take unplug the speedo cable from the drive and stick my flathead drillbit in the groove on the cable, would my drill turn the cable fast enough to get a reading on my speedo? Im having trouble and i have a new cable and newer gauges which are supposed to work. My tach works but so far no luck on the speedo. Any suggestions?
 
Yes.

Actually, use a cordless on its lowest speed -- it doesn't have to turn very fast at all.

I've been able to spin the cable fast enough with my fingers to make the needle rise off the peg a bit, and at least verify that the cable and speedo are OK. You'll have to experiment to make sure you're turning it the right direction.

Is the drive unit on the front wheel turning when you turn the wheel? You can carefully use a couple of jack stands under the fork legs to temporarily get the front wheel off the ground.

It's pretty common that the speedo drive unit gets reinstalled incorrectly, which can squash the drive tabs. You might want to check this, too.
 
hmmmm, i didnt think about the drill not turning the wrong way, i only tried 1 direction. i will check that out right now.
 
i went in the garage unplugged the cable from the gear, hooked up my drill to it again, this time in reverse, and got a reading. Go figure. I guess my speedo drive is bad then??
 
Wow, an 1893 GS! I thought they didn't start making these until the late 70's ! :D
