    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • This forum is for placing reviews for parts, accessories, gear and service as it relates to your GS motorcycle. The key here is "GS Related". There is a bit of latitude here but we don't want to see a review on Maytag washers just because that's what you use to clean your riding jacket in.

    Keep your review as factual as possible and please refrain from personal attacks. Posted articles will be reviewed by the Editors and may be removed at their discretion.

    So let's make this a useful addition to the forum! A special pat on the back goes to Hap Call for coming up with this great idea.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

There is a difference!! Philips screwdrivers are the wrong tool for the job

All our bikes that were built in Japan come with JIS screws. That's why we tend to round the screw head when we use a Philips screwdriver. JIS, which stands for Japanese Industrial Standard is a standard rarely used outside the Pacific Rim & that's why most people I talked to including bike shops have never heard of it.
When I tried to find JIS screwdrivers I had a heck of a time but finally located a company in Texas that sells them.

This is the one I bought. It's like a work of art. Top quality feel & the #3 size fits all the screws I've tried it on perfectly. The minute I fitted it in the first screw I knew it was different. I just dis-assembled an entire set of carbs using this screwdriver, miraculously not rounding one screw. Yeah, it's a bit expensive but you'll own it forever.

i dont think that is too expensive for the correct tool, that will fit correctly and potentially save lots of heartache removing rounded off screws.

Those Vessel screwdrivers are great. I've found the #2 is perfect for the smaller screws, like those on the carbs for example, and the #3 for larger screws, like engine side cover screws or the screws for the electrical grounds.

Very good info indeed! I use a gunsmith screwdriver set and these are in there, nice to know you can get that particular screwstick!
 
I had good luck by of taking a good well-made phillips bit and skimming about a mm off the tip. The fit is not perfect, but it does fit well enough into a JIS screw to not strip it. (At least, I didn't strip any using it.)

I'll still probably get a couple of JIS drivers eventually.

Eil...Yes, thats the major difference from a Phillips to the JIS..the tip. Like you stated, the Phillips has a bit of an extended tip that the JIS doesnt have as much of. Just a little dressing off the tip makes a regular Phillips much more effective.
 
I just met the Japanese owner of Vessel at the National Hardware Show in Vegas... Nice man :)

Didn't get a free set of drivers though... :( :D
