DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I posted a thread a few months ago re: my 83 GS 850 GL (D) which died on the road; seemingly a result of tranny or clutch. Well, thanks to the GSR pages and lots of research, I took off the rear wheel and hub and looked at the splines on the driven gear. If I had not read on the Forum pages about pulling the gear from the hub, I would have thought the splines were OK. But in reality the final drive gear splines were worn down and the driven gear splines were shaved off to the point that there was only 1/16th " left on each spline. This caused the rear wheel to NOT be driven even though the shaft was turning. Why am I posting this?To tell all other shaftie owners to ALWAYS check the splines anytime the wheel is off. ALWAYS take the driven gear out of the hub and look at the back side. NEVER ask a mechanic at a Honda/Suzuki/Polaris/ect dealer questions you don't want to pay $$ to have answered--incorrectly.

GS 850 Help!!

Hello- I just found an 1980 gs850 shaft drive and the engine starts and runs great the clutch cable is nice and strong I hear no clunking or strange noises and I can shift through all 5 gears but there she sit the rear wheel is not moving however I can put it on the center stand and freely spin the wheel. I give up and the shops won't help!. I hope it's a simple fix but

I just spent 1/2 a day removing the rear wheel and re-greasing splines in the hopes of avoiding this very thing.I hope it pays off!

You certainly want to check your hub splines because that is the easiest thing to do and most likely is the problem. I am a little confused because you said yours was a 1980 model. The soft splines didn't appear on the G models until 1982, My 1980 G model has 130,000+ miles on the original splines and still going strong. The '82+ models typically strip out around 30-35,000. Possibly someone along the line swapped in a later year back wheel on your bike.
