Tinted Visor

The glare being a problem for me, I usually rode with sunglasses under my helmet. Then I had trouble reading the instruments as I wear corrective lenses. Been to the optometrists who advised that it would not be possible to prepare tinted wrap around glasses in my prescription.
So, I bought myself a tinted visor (metallic blue to match my helmet and bike) for the SHOEI RF-1000 and what a big difference this made. I now have the option to wear or not-wear my glasses and the visor provides great visibility while cutting the glare some. Not to mention the new visor looks really Bad-ass!

often thought about getting a tinted visor. I too wear glasses/contacts and currently have clear visor on my helmet. The nit with sunglasses (and corrective glasses) that i have is on bumpy rodes the move, I imagine a tinted visor wouldn't have the issue. I suppose those with saddle bags can just carry along a clear visor to swap if they get caught after dark.

Do the dramatically 'darken' your view or are they more uv filtering and keep things bright?

I've just used mine in the house, but they seem to cut the glare and still leave visability good.

My clear lens fits well in my new tank bag. :-D

I just bought a dark smoke for my Icon... they do a light smoke too.

Tested it out last Saturday - great

I think you could probably get away with using the dark on well lit streets just about...

I have clear, smoke and chrome mirrored shields to choose from. I find myself using the clear almost 90% of the time. But on a nice, hot summer day where I am sure I will be home before dark, the mirror shield is awesome.

A quick note on that blue one. I've ridden with one of those for 5 years now. They provide 0, zip, nada, UV protection. I had one on my Shoei helmet and riding on a clear sunny day, I've come out with a burn on my nose. They do provide some glare protection, I can tell because at a certain angle, I can't read one of my LCD screens.

But I ride a lot with my brother, and since I bought a new helmet, I bought another blue shield. Can't let him get confused by looking back in the mirror and not seeing that "blue thing".

I have a bell sprint. There are 3 types of shields for this helmet: clear, light smoke and dark smoke. I have the dark smoke and I thought it might be OK for night riding. I was wrong. I'm going to buy a light smoke and see if it's OK for night riding. I find that's it's a hassle to change shields for day and night use especially when you have to carry the extra shield in case you go for a ride in the daytime and don't return till night. Has anyone have a light smoke shield that they bought for a bell sprint that they want to comment on? Thanks Ted

Hmmmm ......Interesting, Shoei advertises 99% UV protection.

i wear a shoei rf-800 and lust after a blue visor to match my 1000s clone.
i have the clear and the dark tinted visor. on both i find the evening sun really gets you as the opening is quite large for our face. i saw some commercial items that are strips that go on the top of the shield to cut that glare. i tried a low buck trick to see if they might help and ended up jus tusing it instead. i took a strip of 2" aluminum duct tape (really kind of an adhesive backed aluminium foil) found at the hdwre store, and put it across the top of my shield. wow major diff!! its like having one of those sun visors on your helmet and it looks kinda racer kool (function over asthetics).
one roll = 7.00 or so and will do a hundred or more shields.

I've got a clear visor but have stuck in a Hyper Optiks light reactive Fog City. I've recently had to go to multifocus glasses, whereas I used to be able to ride with no prescription and ordinary sunglasses, so I need some tint for summer riding.

The Hyper Optik insert cuts the glare back a fair bit, but sometimes I wish it went darker under the summer sun we get around here. OTOH, when it is foggy and I want it to go clear there is sometimes enough light for it to darken a little. The base 'clear' level is slightly green, the dark level is cobalt blue.

I was riding in thick summer fog and light drizzle in the mountains near here yesterday and wished I had a quick-release visor to swap it out for a full clear one.

Just a note for the masses... All plastic, even #2 plastic (like milk jugs, soda bottles) block 99% UV rays. A clear plastic shield blocks 99% UV rays. It's the nature of plastic, ANY plastic, that it blocks 99% UV. It may not help the brightness, but as far as the harmfull UV rays- ALL PLASTIC blocks 99% of it.

When you see cheap sunglasses for sale that claim "Blocks 99% of Harmfull UV Rays!" Don't kid yourself into thinking, "Wow, these must be great glasses." Even a pair of $1.99 clear safety glasses from the hardware store block 99% of UV rays.
