    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi Group,
I am interested to hear your opinions about my quandary. I have a 1978 and 1979 GS1000e. Both have mixed pros and cons. I rehabbed the 79 to a large degree but all the while was wishing it was a 78. I just like the Skunk. Recently I picked up a more or less complete 78 that is not in as good shape as the 79 mechanically but the body work looks better and still has the orig paint which I find super cool compared to factory 79 color scheme.
The question is, would it be a crime to mix and match?
In theory I normally would not mix them but if I did, it would allow me to get a GS1000e rideable sooner than if I rehab the 78 with all correct frame pegs etc. There is no title as yet for the 78 and it may be difficult to get that to happen.
Other cool projects that I hope to get to before I croak are :IMG_9354.JPGrehabbing a decent 1980 GS1100e that I have, ( same bike and color as one I bought new in 1980) . I have a 1981 GS1100e parts bike that has some body work that is slightly better than the 80 with no title and some severe oxidation on motor cases and internal condition unknown so it makes a good donor bike I think and I don't feel badly about mixing the parts from this with the 1980. I would have the 81 body parts painted the 1980 silver in stock scheme.
I also have a 1970 Honda CB750 that has a stuck clutch and a crappy failing tank liner. I cant wait to get that one rideable as it is in great shape . It is a replacement for the first bike I owned in 1976 and it is also the same color as my original. The turquoise blue.
All tanks on all bikes will require varying amounts of work. Hopefully some will be simply de-rusting but I am not optimistic that I will get off that easy..
Let me know what you think about mix and match on the 78/79 GSs.

A little cosmetic "fib" is not a crime in my books.
With the scarcity of '78, '79,'80 tanks there are a lot of 1000s on the road with '81 tanks. Anything to get them back on the road.
 
Thanks for your input. Score one for the Flexible side of the Argument. Purists out there?
 
Don't see a problem. It's not some kind of specialty bike like an "S" or a Kawa. "Lawson Replica, it's a GS1000. Whatever "you" like is fine. Put the 78 bodywork on and just be honest, a "79" bike with "78" bodywork cause it looks much better. I'd be wishing the "78" bodywork was from a standard blue or maroon GS1000, I like their colors waaaay better than the skunk... As always, just my opinion.
 
Thanks Rphillips. I used to stare at that bike in 1978 knowing that I just couldn't afford it. I think my liking of the skunk is a leftover from that time. you are right in that the bike is not super rare, in fact many have come up for sale that i certainly would have jumped on if I hadn't already jumped on the 79.
