A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Tore Apart the 1000S Engine Tonight...

No grudges here Ed...Now which one of those machines are you going sell me? :D

Russr33 and I have made a deal for the head and cams, they should make a nice addition to his own S.:) In return I get a low mileage stock head which is perfect for my needs.

Cleaned up the cylinder and pistons only to notice one of the cylinder sleeves has a deep score line running vertically. Need to double check the pistons now but didn't notice anything wrong when cleaning them up.

Can anyone help me put a value on this damged big bore kit? The pistons are killer expensive - APE sells them for $679 + sleeves + boring, but obviously having a bad sleeve is very bad for resale value.

Photos of the head after some clean up...:) Intake ports have been fully ported to blend the larger valves. Next step is lap the valves and assemble with new seals, then ship it off to Russ.:)

Drats!
I would have happily sent you my original '79 GS1000S head. :(
I guess you never got the PM or the online response. :(

Eric :(

Thanks for the offer Eric, and to all those that made offers, but I don't want a small port head. This bike is going back to stock so that means CV carbs and stock almost everything. Another thing people keep offering me is cylinders without the extra bolt in the front. It might be lame to want that, but that's what came on the bike so that's what I want.:)

Hi Ed,
i have what you need, big port head + cylinder with the extra front bolt.
stamped 997cc.
I have bought a gs1000 head from chicago area and the shipping was 70$ to my door.
I can try to give you a shipping quote.
Just let me know,

Thanks,
Marc

Geez, a 1176cc GS1000? Is that streetable or is it dragstrip/roadrace only? I'd assume you'd need aftermarket sleeves to make this work? And how common was it to go this big back in the day?

This was very common back before the 1100 came out. Did lots of them.

Jay

Founds some more fun parts, this time in the bottom end.:)

Crank is welded and the clutch hub has a heavy duty back plate. Good stuff.

what numbers do you suppose that motor puts out to the rear wheel?

I don't know, but I suspect it was somewhat cantankerous. The starter clutch has a hard time dealing with the compression for one thing.

The guy that built the engine spent a LOT of money but I noticed one f-up today; all the intake shims were 2.15's - which is the thinnest available. The guy that installed the valves must not have had the cams so the clearance could be set. I shortened the valves by about .4mm in order to have some adjustment room. Kind of a pain - glad it's done.

Good stuff ED
Don't trade that stuff for stock parts. They'll be OK. ;)

Yea, can't see letting go of that crank in a bike I'm most likely going to flip, and that clutch hub is going in my S for sure.:D I'm tempted to tear down my other S engine and install a few of these good parts.

Should've kept that one to yourself. :-\\\
