A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hey, I tried searching but I keep getting fatal error or it wont load. I just had two questions. I'm doing my valve adjustment and I can't seem to take the valve cover end caps off. Do they just pop off? Also, all the 10mm screws on the top of the valve cover are out but the cover won't pop off. I think it's the original gasket and it's on there pretty good. I don't want to jam a flat head in between the cover and head and risk damaging the metal. Does anyone have any tips for removal or any secret bolts that I'm missing?

IIRC, the screws retaining the caps on a 650 are underneath, facing up.

The end covers should come off once the screws are removed. The valve cover itself will be stubborn, but it is brittle, so you have to be careful. Avoid using a screwdriver Instead, carefully place a chisel into the gasket in several areas around the mating surface and gently tap. That will usually work. The trick is to avoid placing a bending strain on the valve cover.

Of course, be sure you have all the bolts out first.

Hi babes.
If by end-caps you mean the chrome round things, they are held by screws.
If you mean the wee rubber half moons then they pull up and out. They usually pop out quite easily, but obviously not for you... So, pull harder... Alternatively, why not leave them on as you can do valve and camshaft work with them still in position.. They must be a good tight fit, so why spoil it?
And yes, the cylinder-head cover is sometimes pretty well stuck on..
Dont use a screwdriver as a wedge, use a rubber mallet and work your way around the cover, hitting only solid parts (but do make sure youve got ALL the bolts out first. There arent any "hidden" away, with the tank off, there all pretty obvious. I think there are 20 in total. And they are different lengths so stick them into a piece ov cardboard, in the same outline as the cylinderhead, with an arrow pointing forwards to show you the front.

Good.luck.
Xxx

It is not necessary to remove the chrome caps to remove the valve cover.

Just leave them attached, you will be able to lift the valve cover high enough to slide the cover out.

If you want to clean them up, they can then be removed from the valve cover, just be sure to put them back before installing the valve cover.

.

what steve said, but also i use rubber mallets to remove pesky covers that stick, tap all around and eventualy they pop loose.then gently and carefully remove the gasket material left on the part with a good gasket scraper, take your time,be patient is key
