Twinpot Brake upgrade on 78 Skunk

This is an amazing thread, just what I was looking for. Thought about doing a front end swap, but I feel like this is the more elegant solution(not to mention cheaper)

Salty Monk, do you happen to have any more kits? or alternatively will you be making any more in the future? This is at the top of my list of mods I need to do :D

Yes, got some sets here :)

There are plenty of calipers on Ebay & some rotors (for around $100). I can likely make you up a full set for $250-$275 plus shipping if necessary (I'll drill the rotors & povide the 3rd bolts but you still need to paint plus do any caliper reconditioning (usually limited to cleaning & perhaps new seals & pads).

Are the bores of the single and dual master cylinders the same on our bikes? I have a single disc 77 GS750, and not sure if I need to upgrade to a dual MC off of our bikes (I will be stripping some parts off of a GS650G tomorrow to get the dual disc fork legs and engine parts), or if the original single caliper MC is fine.

I certainly like the looks of the slightly newer MC's with the aluminum box reservoir and sight glass versus the older style like mine with the screw-on plastic reservoir.

As I understand, all of the lever/MC's that were an OEM match to the Ninja calipers DO NOT have the threaded mount for the mirror? I remember mention of someone saying they used an old clamp half that has the threaded hole for the mirror, and attached it to the newer lever/MC that otherwise did not have a mirror provision. Any ideas? I'm fine with a slightly newer style GS master like I described, but just curious

I bought that brake lever in the auction link above, thanks for the tip! No, it wasn't broken and rewelded, thatis the gap where there is a pivot & spring related to the adjustable leverage dial on the top of the lever, NICE!

Notice anything about that GS1000?

it's got an 1100 alloy swinger, & also just noticed some strange horseshoe brace that must stiffen the swinger??? Notice any cbr&ninja parts???!!!??? Ohlin's or other external reservoir $$$$$ rear shocks also. Nice. GSR member's ride?

Looks familiar, might be IanC? If so the shocks are some Ohlin's copies from memory :)

Still got some bracket sets & a couple of full kits of rotors, calipers etc if anyone wants anything to get ready for spring... :)

Hey Salty_Monk,

I'm definitely interested in this mod, have been for a long time actually as I have also felt the need to "grab a handful" sometimes.

What you're offering in your last post is the COMPLETE set? Rotors, brakets, bolts, calipers.... meaning the only thing needed is some elbow grease?

If so, pm me with the price to Atlanta, GA.

Cheers!

Can you tell me what the spread is between the two rotors once the spacers are installed?

should be around 147mm outside to outside. the hub I just got in the mail is about 104mm wide to the rotor surfaces (calipers don't reach far enough over spoke flanges to give you exact figure), plus 21.5mm offset for each rotor. Actually with the adapters, you are using 17mm rotors plus 5mm adapters, so about 148mm if my hub width guestimation is correct.

Is 147 mm the outside to outside spacing of the disks for the GS 1000?
I did a quick measurement of the spacing between my fork legs and I have less than 140 mm??
I'm asking because I'd like to fit a wheel that has 135 mm center to center spacing.
Would that fit with the twinpot upgrade?
My disks are 300 mm in diameter.

John I can measure for you but not until I get home... In Atlanta right now

I believe the 135 mm center to center spacing won't work in a std GS 1000 fork.
The spacing can be reduced to 117 mm with other disks but will it be enough for the twinpot calipers to clear the wheel?
What's the inside caliper overhang from the disk center?
Ideally it should be less than 40 mm ( to be confirmed).

I don't know if we are talking about the same thing but a std GS 1000 has an outside disk spacing of 117 mm.
As the CBR disks have the same offset ( 17 mm) as the original disks, the new spacing is 117+10=127 mm due to the 5 mm spacers.
SM will you please confirm?
