Twinpot Brake upgrade on 78 Skunk

Looking at this mod over the last week or so I have realised you can get a caliper off an EX500 / 250 for the right side that's only 3 years old or so....

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/08-E...rcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item563c5f030e

It would be cheaper to buy 2 of these & then track down an older left one & use the pistons, seals etc out of the 2nd newer one to rebuild the older left side than to buy all new parts from Bike Bandit.

Hope that makes sense & helps some people out... :)

This thread is exactly what I'm looking for!

My '81 GS450e needs a new front brake setup. The rotor may be able to be machined, but I'd like to replace the caliper and pads.

Salty,
-Will the setup you've put together work on a 450?
-Do I have to do a dual caliper kit? Or could I just redo the single-side brake?

How big is the stock rotor on that bike? If it's 274mm then it's possible you can just do a single sided upgrade (but you'll have to change out the rotor for a larger one)

If it's 296mm you can still do it but instead of changing the rotor you'll need to change the fork leg. Possible that a GS650 leg would fit but I'm not 100% on that.

It's the smaller rotor. So would I just need these parts? Anything I'm missing?

-New Caliper
-Caliper relocation bracket
-New Rotor (from big-brake gs?)
-Brake fluid

I had forgotten to post a pic of my conversion so here you go. Thanks for the parts and the knowledge Dan.

Nice upgrade. Improving brakes is probably one of the most important things to do for safety. Great work Dan.:clap::clap:

And Russ :o

I can't be 100% but it *should* work.... What's the distance between your caliper bolts in mm?

Compare to this pic....

I do have one odd bracket because of someone else doing this on a 550 once so that works for me too..

It's the Aluminum kind so you'll need some longer bolts (8mm fine thread, you can get them online at Bolt Depot worst case but my local Truvalu does 50mm then you can cut them down to 45mm.)

Thanks Pos. Russ - looking good! :)

Dan :)

One set left (plus the odd single one) until the next batch come in....

Dan :)

Pending payment the last set should be sold....

Anyone else who wants a set let me know, hopefully I'll get a few more sets in the next couple of weeks or so.

Dan :)

Wow, i'm glad i only paid $45 for the set i got last week. Amazing what some people think what some used parts are worth...

All steel construction this time (makes them cheaper plus allows use of thinner material so you can use stock bolts). Powdercoated Satin Black.
Weight penalty is negligable.

Includes brackets for the calipers & the rotor spacers.

$80 plus shipping (Usually about $6).

As usual these are fit at your own risk, not tested, DOT Certified etc.

The most important thing is to check tolerances carefully.

Remember that the speedo drive dust cover needs cutting down if you fit the CBR rotors.

Slight problem... 1 part is missing from the kits so currently trying to track them down or have re-made. Will keep everyone posted.
Unfortunately I am not going to be onsite personally until about November otherwise I could have pulled some ears & got this done quicker.... Unfortunately they are a pain in the butt for the people producing (more of a favour for me) so they don't get top priority.

Should have 2 more bracket sets early next week latest... I think there are a couple waiting... Mitch & ??

Dan :)

PM back at ya.....

I need to work on a supply, will update this thread when I have any more info.

Dan :)
