A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Using a more modern Speedo and Tach

Hey Everyone!

So I recently have ventured back into the life of having two wheels that go very fast and am in the process of cleaning up a 1981 GS850L, the bike is very clean and mechanically is nearly perfect. One thing that's personally just bothering me is the speedo bounces a lot and can be hard to read when above 60+ mph and the knob used to reset the Mileage is gone. So right now I'm contemplating replacing the whole gauge cluster with a more modern piece even digital speedo with a analog tach or something like that. I know it may be considered blasphemy by some but I like the aesthetic of old school with modern tech. Anyways, I wanted to know if anyone has tried doing something like this and may have any recommendations? Thanks and I'll try and get some pics of the bike up on here asap!

A bouncing speedo generally indicates the cable is dried out and snagging internally - not good and not long left on it in that condition. You can extend its life by lubing it properly with gear oil, and put off buying a digital one until it suits your convenience.
If you choose to lube it, disconnect from top and bottom, remove the inner entirely, and shoot down through the outer with kero, WD40, etc. Wipe the inner clean with same. Then lube outer with gear oil - let it dribble down through it and let it drip dry for an hour or two; same with the inner - lube it with gear oil, wipe it off and fit it to the outer. THIS BIT IS IMPORTANT - pull the inner up and wipe the top two or three inches drier - not running with oil. If you leave oil up the top, it will migrate to the inner workings of the speedo and wreck it.
Happy hunting.
Ps. same for the tacho cable.
