Valve cover gasket

Quick question guys:

I am changing my valve cover gasket and the cam plugs (or whatever they are called) and I would like to know if this job will require any sort of gasket sealer. I have a few small tubes of the gasket repair which is a silicon compound I think. Any info is helpful.

Some will put a very small amount of sealer on the curved portion of the cam end plugs, if they are used and hard, but with new units, you should be OK.

Any sealer that you put on anywhere else will only make it more difficult to remove the cover. In fact, many of us will actually soak the gasket with WD-40 before installing it so it will come apart easier next time we check valve adjustment.

I put some black high temp gasket sealant under the curved part of the cam end plugs as Steve said. I used bearing grease on both sides of the main gasket. Took the cover off recently, changed out the cams, readjusted the valve spacings, and reused the gasket after regreasing it. That's the first time I've ever tried using grease like that, and I will always do it from now on. I used to put black sealant all over both sides of the gasket because I wanted to make sure there were no leaks. But it creates a nightmare of cleaning it off the next time you take the cover off. I've had zero leaks since using the grease and the sealant only under the cam end plugs.
