A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Very High Idle

I'm having a problem with "high idling" on my 1983 GS 650 L . When the bike is first started, it idles just fine...somewhere in the 800 rpm range...But, after it's been running for a while, the idle will jump up dramatically... sometimes to as much as 2,000-3,000 rpms?? And then again, sometimes it just idles normally. My first guess would be something to do with the choke...Does it have an adjustment? Or, could it be something else?

Thanks to all for the help.

Wouldn't be crud build up on the throttle linkages, or not returning all the way back to the throttle stop due to sticking? When it does it sometimes it would seem to me to be more of a cable/ linkage type problem.

Well, we've cleaned the entire area as well as we could. I will add this thugh, you can wiggle the choke cable and it will cause the engine rpm's to rise and fall...not to the degree that I'm talking about with the high idle, but it will change the rpms.. Is there and adjustment for the choke?
Thanks for your help..

Your on it Chester, that choke cable is the problem. Check the cable routing,as it should have no play. Adjustment wise, I'm not sure where your choke lever knob or lever is located. If it's a lever on the L/H control/switch block, you should be able to adjust it there. Otherwise, it will be down at the carbs with the end of the cable into a housing that you are able to either screw in or out for adjustment. Probally best to look at this first.

You can look at the choke plungers and see what's happening. Watch as you move the choke control, and see if the plungers move at all when you move the cables around or turn the bars.

More than likely, though, you have an intake leak, out-of-sync carbs or both. The good new is that neither of these is difficult to correct.

(Okay, the intakes can put up a fight, but on a relative basis, it's not bad...)

Intake leak is my guess.

I looked at my carbs, and it seems that the rubber boots that connect the carbs to the head are in pretty rough shape, at least appearance wise.. I'm assuming that the part in the picture is the piece that this rubber boot connects to..then to the head.. My question is, are these rubber boots connected to the part shown or are the seperate and should I go ahead and replace them when I check the o-rings? And....I checked the schematic at a couple of different parts websites, and I didn't see these rubber boots listed...do you know exactly what they are called and where I can find replacements...And last, but probably not least, my bike is listed on the title as a 1983 GS 650 L....I find very few references to this model...Do you think this is a mistake on my title...could it be that the bike is actually a GS 650 GL...or something like that??

Yes, GL. The rubber boots are officially called Pipe, Intake RH or LH (you need two of each). Located in the cylinder head section of the parts fishe. Don't forget new o-rings.
