WANTED: info for source of fine-thread bolts

Steve

GS Whisperer
As the title says, I am looking for a source for some fine-thread machine screws, actually.

Very specifically, I need M6 x 25 or 30, with a 0.5 thread pitch.

I have done the usual searches on the internet, have found only a couple of likely sources. Two phone calls later, one said they could not help me, the other one said he would see what he can find.

I have a project in mind that will use these in groups of three, so I need a minimum of three, and, depending on price, can go for 24 or more.

I am looking for an aftermarket source, as the OEM for the original product wants $18.95 each.

.

Sure, go ahead. :p

.

what project are you working on steve? :)

i have searched and i cant find any 6x0.5mm thread bolts or set screws.
are you sure it is 0.5mm pitch?

i can find 6x0.5mm taps and dies so something must use it somewhere!

Possible to make your own fasteners? If that is "standard fine" I believe my Harbor freight tap & die set has that size.

I recently used it to turn more thread on some 8mm brake disk bolts so they are a reasonable quality it seems.

As someone else said above, possible to drill out & tap larger?

Is it possible to tap the hole to a more common size?
Yes, it's technically "possible", but far from practical.

Yes, it's used "somewhere". You have several of them in use, yourself.

I am working on replacing the sync screws on the carbs. Yamaha uses the same diameter/pitch screws as Suzuki, but they are a Phillips head pan head screw with a tension spring, much like the idle speed adjuster on the GS. Because it's for the sync screws, I feel that I need to retain the fine thread.

As much as I hated to do it, I only looked at Bike BANDIT for pricing. I have not yet established any sources for Yamaha parts, like I have for Suzuki. BB says "retail" price is $20.85, their price is $18.95. To add insult to injury, the tension spring is another $8.49. Multiply that by three sync screws per carb set, you are looking at $88.32 per bike.

I can get springs at ACE Hardware, so I am just looking for some screws without getting screwed.

dont suppose you have a yamaha part number?
Yamaha part number is 12R-1490K-00-00

It looks quite a bit like that, but the part number does not match.

It's not for the kid's Venture.

Where I saw these screws and got the idea is on an XS1100. Unfortunately, some of the vendors do not carry much from that time frame, and I don't know what newer bikes had similar screws. I have threaded the XS1100 screw into the GS carb, it fits perfectly.

The Yamaha parts department at Babbitt's is called yamahapartshouse.com. They have the screws for 'only' $13.83, but that's still too much for that small an item.

EDIT: I just did a reverse search on the part number. Evidently it was used on virtually every Yamaha that had multiple carbs, from the '78 XS650 through the '97 Phazer SS and Venture XL.

Thanks, Al.

I did not see any metric sizing in the screw blanks, but you did give me another idea.

Why not get some longer M6 bolts from the hardware store, cut off the 1.0 pitch threads, then put on my own 0.5 pitch threads?

Might cost a buck or two per bolt/screw, but that's a LOT better than the $18-20 from the vendors. :-\\\

That sounds like a plan, another option if you are making set screws is to purchase a piece of M6 drill rod. Grainger or mcmaster carr should have it pretty cheap. M6 is a pretty common size screw, I would think you could pick up a box of 25 or 50 screws from mcmaster carr pretty reasonably.
