Since the weather has finally turned springlike (is that a word?), my bike and I have been my wife's taxi to and from her workplace (lucky for her, she's still working a real job, with good money). It was 43* F when we left the house this morning at 6:45 am. I wanted to take the twisty back road to the job shop where she is the Quality Manager, but she wanted me to get back out on the main highway, State Hwy 371, so I complied. It was entirely uneventful, even the traffic was light (first time since the governor's fishing opener week last week). I dropped her off at work, and headed for the twisty road to go home (suspenseful building Jaws type background music here).
Riding on the not too long twisty road, I cranked up the tunes, the radio station was into Led Zep this morning, perfect riding tunes! I really thought I was alert to all my surroundings as I deftly zipped through the curves, reveling in the warm weather and bright sun. There were no other vehicles on the road, but me. As I rounded a smooth right hand sweeper I saw a black SUV coming from the opposite direction. My attention was mostly on the oncoming traffic, and as I was accelerating out of the turn, I caught a flash of something out of the corner of my left eye. I had just enough time to go WOT, I heard the clatter of hooves as the devil deer flashed across the road, in the spot I had just been. Talk about a close call! It was so close to me that I could clearly hear the hooves on the road. I probably imagined that I could hear it sucking air as it went past. The SUV didn't even slow down, I didn't look at the driver to see what he/she was doing, probably drinking coffee, texting and eating donuts or something, so the close call I had was most likely totally unnoticed by that driver. If I'd been nailed by that deer, he most likely would have added insult to injury by crushing me and bike before he realized anything.
Anyway, that was my morning ride, and I had to tell y'all about it, it's not just the cagers that are out to get us, it's the Bambi critters and all their friends as well.
