A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Weird Tachometer Issue

This morning I went for a ride and I noticed my tach wasn't working at all. The threaded ferrule on the tach side sometimes comes loose and the cable drops out. When I got where I was going, I checked it and it was tight. I removed the cable from the tach and noticed it wasn't spinning. I grabbed the end and pushed it down into the cable and it started spinning. Weird but ok. I threaded it back in and once again, nothing.
What's going on here? Why is the rod part of the cable not staying put when it's in the tach?

If you're working on some model of a GS Suzuki, I'd try, Grab the end and pull it out of the cable and see what happens. Hopefully part of it will pull all the way out. Simple fix, new cable. If you're working on something else it may be different.

Sorry, I should have posted the bike I'm working on. It's an 82 GS1100 GK. Should I be able to pull the rod all the way out of the cable, or not? If I remember correctly, my speedo cable came all the way out. I greased it and put it back in. No issues.

You can pull it out from the bottom, if you pull it out from the tach end, it's broke.

Oh, so you mean it should not move up towards the tach, but should be inserted and removed from the bottom (engine side)? If that's the case, then yes. Apparently its broke!

I happens. This is the pic of the engine end of my tach cable a few weeks ago. Worked when I parked the bike up for the winter. Broken on first run this spring. Yes, if you can pull the innards up through the top, it's broken. You'll see when you undo the bottom end.

Confirmed. I pulled it off and the slotted end stayed on the engine! Ordered a new one.

Thanks for the help!
