Wham Bam, Busted Clavicle?Doh!

Boring?

Boring?

FIRST: I want all you guys to know I'm reading all your posts, and am getting lots of good tips and advice, Thanks!

So, when will I be able to pick a guitar, or pluck a bass?
I was actually making good progress on both when I crashed.
Bummer…
Today I'm gonna try to play one handed drums along with some Blues recordings. I got 2 good legs and left arm, so i can at least keep a beat. :-\\\

Sorry about your mishap.

Nearly a year ago, I went down on my BMW GS and broke my left one, a couple of ribs, dislocated the shoulder, and tweaked my neck. One thing that I was in denial about was my age. Yup, there's no way of getting around it. Once one gets into his fifties, it takes longer to heal up. I'm still feeling frequent twinges and have days when I have some IBU with my breakfast.

Don't try to rush things.....we aren't in our twenties (physically, that is).

The String Bass (upright bass as some people call them) you could play right now as long as you're not bowing it and you keep your arm in the sling up against your body. Cramps the style a bit, but it works. Otherwise, guitars and so on don't work too well.

Something to do?

Something to do?

Hey Dan, I ain't got an upright, but I do have a Yamaha bass with a small body. I can reach over and pluck the strings OK.
Hey Bruin, I saw a TV story on that drummer and his accident, quite a good story.
Well Thursday I came down with a bad cold and that made my week miserable. It magnified all my aches and pains about 4X. Plus I pulled a stomach muscle from coughing, boy does that bring me cheer. :D
But I really flipped out when I pulled my car out of the garage and saw antifreeze on the floor!
Trouble comes in triplets, I got the triple blues?

Hey Bill, sorry to read that you had an off!.Hope that the break isn't too bad and they manage to set it right.I broke mine in the middle and detached it at both ends in an auto wreck 10 years ago and the hospital messed it up so badly I have to go in 3 weeks for an MRI to see if they are going to re-break it and try to fix the damage,2 of the tendons that join my shoulder to my neck are wrapped over the bone instead of behind it so I now have difficulty turning my head to the right.
I agree with the rest of the posters about the calcium(I just drank lots of full fat milk) and the swimming- but stay with going across the pool in the shallow end cause when the muscles around it cramp(and they will) you don't want to be in deep water-have a guess how I know!!. You might also find that a pillow under your arm will help you sleep on your side as it keeps the pressure off the healing bones. Get better soon and you can now use the convalescant time to order and watch all the Northwest 200, Ulster Grand Prix and TT dvd's that your loving and caring wife will of course allow you to order!!!!!.Johnny

That tops my complaints. Like a bad PO story. Best 'O luck on the fix Johnny.

Wow, my sympathies, Bill. That's a hell of a way to start the season. Here's hoping for an uneventful return to full functionality.

Yeah, a lot of us aren't getting much younger here, and it doesn't work wonders for recovery times. It took me almost a year to recover from a torn rotator cuff I incurred last February. (OWW!) I'm just now back to some of my previous exercise routines, and I'm always leery anymore about applying a lot of power to anything. I hate being less resilient than I used to be.

On the other hand -- an 8-week (or so) recovery puts you at the early-June area. Not much consolation, but at least you'll have a summer this year.

Hope it goes well for ya.

Yeah I was feeling sorry for myself-you know bitching and whining, until my wife and I were in a supermarket and a guy walked past with a completly empty left sleeve-he had lost the arm right to the shoulder and I just thought "quit your complaining ya soft git"!!!!.How did you get on with the hospital, did they manage to put it in the right place? try the pillow idea it's worked for a few other people I know. Here's an idea for the guitar playing-put it on your lap like a hawaiian guitar then you can use downward pressure on the strings with your fingers which should'nt affect the muscles in your shoulder and upper arm( I used to work for a guitar maker as a sprayer/ polisher), it works for Jeff Healy, he plays like that because he is blind and a damn good player. hope you heal fast and well, Johnny

Jeff Healy?awesome soloist

Jeff Healy?awesome soloist

Thanks for telling me about Jeff Healy, somebody I forgot about. The guy had talent. I'm not gonna pick up his method over the week! But I decided to buy a refurbished Epiphone SG Faded brown, only $240 W/ship. It can slip under my sling no prob. After closing my track day project, I got room for a pick me up.
I sent a new Michlien Power Pilot back, won't be needin' it.
My GSX750F is not hurt bad at all, in fact with a new master cylinder and clip on bar it's ready for the track. But I can't afford any more down time from injury, so maybe that's done.
As for my clav, I met with an orthopedic surgeon on Tuesday. An old guy, his opinion was to just let the jumbled mess heal as is. With just the fig 8 strap on my shoulders.
Not my first choice, but how could I afford surgery with no insurance? But really, would an insurance adjuster spend a dime for my sake? :p Same result, but I still got my dime.

Bill,
Thoughts are with you. Get better soon!
You can always keep up on the guitar playin on PS3 Guitar Hero. Those guitars are small enough to fit unders your sling.

Last year my buddy did exactly the same and front-sided his GSX750 making a left at the end of his street. The sad (but funny) thing was... before we left his driveway he said to me "I've got to take it easy till the tires warm up". Then bam!!! down he went less than 50ft from his driveway. Maybe it's a GSX thing!!!

Back on the bike, at long last.

Back on the bike, at long last.

Got back on my 1100G today and took a ride, felt great. ;) (7 weeks later and 75% healed)
My shoulder's quite stiff from the restricted movement during the healing process, but it felt good most of the ride until I got about home. When I made the final turn into my driveway and switched off the bike, it felt like like a big painful rock. But it was OK just a couple minutes later.
I was really stale as I began, and stalled at the first light. DOH!
My corners were clunky, and I missed 2nd a couple times. DOH! DOH!
But after a half hour of riding up and around some country roads, I got my groove back.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the update. Slow and steady there, buddy. Have you been doing any therapy or working out? I've been on a workout regimen since my accident and, although my knee is noisy - being crepitus, it has crepitations, I can run up and down stairs, walk for miles, put my bike on the center stand, etc. It's back nearly 100%.

I'm hoping for the fullest recovery possible for you. Remember, "Use it or lose it". My knee hurts a little sometimes. But if I stop doing something just because it hurts a little, eventually I'll never be able to do that again.

Take care,

Cliff

Bill- you're right there with Rossi!! And, Cliff, do you wear a knee brace, the simple kind, like Ace, or Mueller?

Never the same again, but keep trying.

I just got the OK to take the clavicle strap off Thursday 4/28/11. So It's hard to lift my elbow up high. I'm just starting my own stretching exercises, but I'm a professional handyman and am constantly working my body. I won't try to pull or lift anything heavy with my right for awhile.
Glad you're own mobility is coming along, but we'll never be the same. In fact I used to throw a 90 mph fast ball! :p (BS).
Not sure when I'll try to pull a bike up on it's center stand, but just a few weeks.
Playing guitar or bass tires my shoulder after just 10 minutes. Just yesterday I think I got 60 minutes total playing time, but in 5-10 minute sessions over several hours.
Life is good?
Bill

Hey Bill,

Perhaps you can look into a Steinberger bass, or good Hohner copy. Those headless basses are really small and, with the right pickups, sound pretty good.

All the best to you and yours,

Yeah, be careful. It may feel better than it actually is and it WILL let you know. If you're lifting or doing threapy just make slow movements and it'll let you know when enough is enough and to back off. Glad it's healing well to this point, you're on the home stretch. Treat it good for another month then giver hell. As for never being the same ....hogwash. If you're active it'll come back as good as new.

I feel ya man, after surgery I was in a sling for 8 weeks and prior to that 4 weeks. Tennis elbow sets in fast but luckily it was just bone damaged for you so recovery will be quick.

Listen to your doctor! Don't try and play like any guitarists from Motley Crue.
